(1.34 x 10 11 ). Fur<strong>the</strong>r testing is needed in <strong>the</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t extract concentrations <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

inhibition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bacteria.<br />

The <strong>an</strong>tibacterial activity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>medicinal</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t extracts <strong>an</strong>d traditional preparations<br />

especially M. major <strong>an</strong>d L. leonurus supports <strong>the</strong> traditional uses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se pl<strong>an</strong>ts for<br />

treating infected skin lesions.<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> this study was achieved by proving <strong>the</strong> in vitro <strong>an</strong>tibacterial <strong>activities</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> indigenous pl<strong>an</strong>ts used traditionally for bacterial wound infections. The objectives<br />

<strong>of</strong> screening indigenous pl<strong>an</strong>ts for <strong>an</strong>tibacterial activity <strong>an</strong>d reporting on <strong>the</strong> MIC <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t extracts were also achieved. This study may contribute to <strong>the</strong> increased<br />

scientific <strong>investigation</strong> done on indigenous <strong>medicinal</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>ts used traditionally in <strong>the</strong><br />

different parts <strong>of</strong> South Africa.<br />

The different chemical composition <strong>of</strong> <strong>medicinal</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>ts <strong>an</strong>d extraction solvent<br />

characteristics influenced <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t material extracted from <strong>medicinal</strong><br />

pl<strong>an</strong>ts. In this study M. major yielded <strong>the</strong> highest average concentration <strong>of</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t<br />

material extracted <strong>an</strong>d B. frutescence yielded <strong>the</strong> lowest concentration <strong>of</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t<br />

material following <strong>the</strong> different extractions. The difference in <strong>the</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t concentration<br />

yield for <strong>the</strong> two pl<strong>an</strong>ts may be ascribed to <strong>the</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t processing <strong>an</strong>d surface area <strong>of</strong><br />

pl<strong>an</strong>t material presented for extraction.<br />

The acetone extraction solvent yielded <strong>the</strong> highest average concentration <strong>of</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t<br />

material extracted <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> aqueous solvent produced <strong>the</strong> lowest average<br />

concentration <strong>of</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t material extracted from <strong>medicinal</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>ts. Similar findings<br />

were displayed in previous <strong>investigation</strong>s using <strong>the</strong>se solvents for pl<strong>an</strong>t extraction<br />

(Martini & El<strong>of</strong>f, 1998).<br />

Consequently <strong>the</strong> acetone extract <strong>of</strong> M. major yielded <strong>the</strong> highest concentration <strong>of</strong><br />

pl<strong>an</strong>t material extracted in comparison to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r solvents <strong>an</strong>d <strong>medicinal</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>ts.<br />

The pl<strong>an</strong>t extracts <strong>of</strong> M. major followed by L. leonurus gave promising <strong>an</strong>tibacterial<br />

activity against a wide r<strong>an</strong>ge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bacteria that was tested. Purification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> B.<br />

frutescens <strong>an</strong>d Z. aethiopica pl<strong>an</strong>t extracts may yield more potent extracts with<br />

higher <strong>an</strong>tibacterial activity.<br />
