2.2.1.2 Phytomedicine <strong>an</strong>d phytochemistry<br />

Approximately 350 pl<strong>an</strong>t species <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> estimated 3000 higher pl<strong>an</strong>t species<br />

commonly used in South Africa for <strong>medicinal</strong> purposes has undergone chemical<br />

<strong>investigation</strong> (George et al. 2001). The popularity <strong>of</strong> <strong>medicinal</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>ts accomp<strong>an</strong>ied<br />

with <strong>the</strong> limited phytochemical <strong>an</strong>alysis, has led to increased research in <strong>the</strong> safety<br />

<strong>an</strong>d efficacy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>medicinal</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>ts.<br />

Medicinal pl<strong>an</strong>ts have a wide reputation for containing active components that serve<br />

as phyto<strong>medicinal</strong>s <strong>an</strong>d valuable <strong>the</strong>rapeutic agents for treating disease.<br />

Modern medicine rely heavily on <strong>the</strong> active compounds <strong>of</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>ts, be <strong>the</strong>y natural or<br />

syn<strong>the</strong>tic such as secondary metabolites in higher pl<strong>an</strong>ts which serve as defence<br />

agents against microorg<strong>an</strong>isms (http://www.world.std.com/~krahe/, Fabry et al.,<br />

1997). At least 130 pl<strong>an</strong>t drugs used worldwide are ei<strong>the</strong>r isolated compounds<br />

extracted from higher pl<strong>an</strong>ts or were modified syn<strong>the</strong>tically (George & v<strong>an</strong> Staden,<br />

2000).<br />

According to Kong et al. (2003) among <strong>the</strong> recent 25 best-selling drugs in <strong>the</strong> world,<br />

30% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> drugs originated from natural products. Some South Afric<strong>an</strong><br />

phytomedicine that have gained worldwide popularity include devil’s claw, Afric<strong>an</strong><br />

potato, buchu, aloe products <strong>an</strong>d rooibos tea (George et al., 2001).<br />

Recent developments in <strong>the</strong> traditional medicine sector include <strong>an</strong>ti-diabetic <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>tic<strong>an</strong>cer<br />

formulations from Su<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>an</strong>dia under <strong>the</strong> br<strong>an</strong>d name Healer’s Choice jointly<br />

developed by R<strong>an</strong>d Afrika<strong>an</strong>s University <strong>an</strong>d Pharmacare (George & v<strong>an</strong> Staden,<br />

2000). Up to 90% <strong>of</strong> phyto<strong>medicinal</strong>s available in South Africa are exotic Europe<strong>an</strong><br />

formulations (George et al., 2001). According to George & v<strong>an</strong> Staden (2000) <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is a growing need to promote <strong>the</strong> development <strong>an</strong>d marketing <strong>of</strong> indigenous<br />

medicines, some <strong>of</strong> which are more efficacious th<strong>an</strong> imported formulations.<br />

Research <strong>an</strong>d development <strong>of</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t based drugs is time consuming, resource<br />

intensive <strong>an</strong>d full <strong>of</strong> uncertainties (George & v<strong>an</strong> Staden, 2000). The ethnobot<strong>an</strong>ical<br />

approach to sampling pl<strong>an</strong>ts for research are based on traditional knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />
