number <strong>of</strong> bacterial strains <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> MIC’s were obtained for <strong>the</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t extracts<br />

using ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> microtitre plate or <strong>the</strong> agar dilution assays.<br />

The microtitre plate assay gave reproducible results when testing <strong>the</strong> MIC’s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>medicinal</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t extracts against a total <strong>of</strong> 21 bacterial strains <strong>of</strong> S. aureus (4 strains),<br />

MRSA (4 strains), P. aeruginosa (3 strains), A. baum<strong>an</strong>ii (5 strains)& K. pneumoniae<br />

(5 strains) using <strong>the</strong> microtitre plate assay.<br />

Antibacterial activity screening <strong>of</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t extracts were initially performed against<br />

bacterial strains <strong>of</strong> S. pyogenes [no. 6], E feacalis [no.’s 6 – 11] <strong>an</strong>d P. mirabilis<br />

[no.’s 6 – 15]. The results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se bacteria were inconsistent <strong>an</strong>d not compatible<br />

with <strong>the</strong> spectrophotometric method <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong>alysis, <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong> agar dilution assay was<br />

used for <strong>the</strong>se bacteria.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> agar dilution assay <strong>the</strong> MIC’s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>t extracts were tested against 15<br />

bacterial strains <strong>of</strong> S. pyogenes (5 strains), E. feacalis (5 strains) <strong>an</strong>d P. mirabilis (5<br />

strains) (Table 6).<br />
