C 11 Bark Beetles A bark beetle survey initiated in 1964 to obtain information on the distribution of various species attacking spruce and pine in Ontario was continued in 1965. Samples were collected from sawlogs, pulpwood, living trees, and slash which showed evidence of beetle activity. A cumulative summary of species collected in the district is shown in Table 14. Bonfield Twp. 8 infested shoots per 500, Mattawan 4 per 500 shoots. Infested buds scattered through Gillies Limit and Caldwell twps. Reproduction heavily infested at one point in Coleman Twp. Fringe trees heavily infested at numerous locations. Low numbers through Caldwell, Kirkpatrick, and MacPherson twps. Heavy mining of foliage at several points on Lake Temagami. Heavily infested trees at many locations. Mines present from June to late August. Pockets of light defoliation in Gibbons, Crerar, Barr, and Lorrain twps. Four colonies, one from each of the townships of Sisk, McLaren, Notman, and Gladman. Light mining in Notman, Blyth, and Papineau twps. No mined leaves at sample stations. A few in Bonfield and South Lorrain twps. Occasional colonies in the northern part of the district. Quantitative samples in Blyth, Coleman, and Strathcona twps. totalled 25 9 4 and 12 larvae respectively. Colonies common through the central part of the district. None found on bF in 1965. A few larvae from bS in Cynthia Twp. Scattered colonies through the twps. of McLaren, Briggs, Caldwell, Strathcona, and MacPherson.
