Poplar Leaf-roller, Pseudexentera oregonana Wlshm,
A marked increase in numbers of this leaf roller occurred throughout the
district in 1965. Areas of medium-to-heavy infestation are shown on the
accompanying map. A light-to-medium infestation was observed in Fenton Township
and light infestations were recorded in the adjoining townships of Fauquier,
Teetzel and Gurney. Leaf rolls were found at scattered locations in the remainder
of the district (see photograph).
Spruce Bud Gall Midge, Rhabdophaga swainei Felt
The spruce bud gall midge was found in small numbers throughout the district.
No infested buds were found at four of five sampling stations. A count of 0.47
infested buds was obtained from black spruce in McCrea Township but none were found
on 100 white spruce trees examined at the same location.
Parasites have been abundant in collections from the district in recent years.
For example, collections in 1963, 1964 and 1965 revealed 57, 100 and 60 per cent
parasitism respectively.
Bark Beetles
Surveys were carried out to determine the species of bark beetles present in
the district (Table 20).
