Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion SMITH (SWANSBURG), Marion WWII Marion was born in Little Harbour, Shelburne County, NS, in 1918. She was a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps, serving in Canada. Marion is a Life Member of the Digby Branch #020 of The Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted by Digby Branch #020 of The Royal Canadian Legion. SMITH, Nathan Lloyd AFGHANISTAN Private Nathan Lloyd Smith (June 28, 1975 – April 17, 2002). Born in Tatamagouche, NS. He graduated from the commercial diving course at Seneca College in Newmarket, ON, in 1997, and joined the Canadian Army in September 1998. Served with the 3 rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry based in Edmonton, Alberta. He was killed in a friendly fire incident near Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 2002. He received the Dag Hammarskjold Medal, a medal given posthumously by the United Nations to members of Peacekeeping operations who lost their lives in the performance of their duties. Smith’s mother, Charlotte, was named the Silver Cross Mother in 2003 by The Royal Canadian Legion. Submitted by Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion. SMITH, Roy Sidney WWI Roy was born in Otter Brook in 1898, son of David Holmes and Martha (Fulton) Smith. He was a member of the 1 st Canadian Motorized Machine Gun Brigade of the 106 th Overseas Battalion. He saw most of his war action in France. At one time, he was gassed, left for dead, and thrown into the back of a truck picking up dead bodies. A soldier riding in the back of the truck saw his hand move and pulled him out. He married Nellie Rutherford, daughter of Frederick and Isabel (Waddell) Rutherford of Middle Stewiacke. After the war, he homesteaded in Saskatchewan and later moved to California. Roy passed away in 1967. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. SMITH, Thomas Henry WWII Thomas, son of James and Catherine (Payne) Smith of Lower Sackville, NS, was born in 1915. He served with the Royal Canadian Artillery in Halifax. Tom married Bessie Mae Kaulback, daughter of Gilbert and Katherine (McAllister) of Mosquito Cove, and lived in Halifax until 1976 when they moved to the Cove.
