FRANCIS, Stephen Joseph “Joe”<br />
WWII<br />
Joe was born in Queens County on September 16, 1914. He resides on the Wildcat<br />
Reserve in Queens County. He was a Private in the West Nova Scotia Regiment and<br />
studied mountain climbing in Scotland and then went to Germany, France, Belgium,<br />
Holland and England. He was taken as a POW less than a month before the end of<br />
the war. Joe is the last living Mi’kmaw Smaknis Veteran in his community.<br />

FRANCIS, Walter Buchanan<br />
WWI<br />
Walter, son of Thomas and Margaret (Fulton) Francis of Upper Stewiacke Village,<br />
was born in 1897. He signed up with the 193 rd Battalion and fought at Vimy Ridge.<br />
He lost a leg in the war. After the war, he went to Saskatchewan and attended the<br />
University of Saskatchewan receiving degrees in Arts and Law. He was very active<br />
in the legal profession in Saskatchewan and served on the Board of Governors for<br />
the University and was a force behind the co-operative movement in Western<br />
Canada. In 1954, he received an honorary degree from St. Francis Xavier University<br />
in Antigonish, NS. Walter passed away in 1964.<br />

FRAZEE, Isaac “Slim”<br />
WWI & WWII<br />
Isaac was born in Londonderry, NS, in 1882. He fought in the trenches in France<br />
during WWI, where he was wounded. He enlisted again in 1939 and was on the first<br />
ship carrying troops to England, serving with the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Canadian</strong> Engineers. Isaac<br />
died from a stroke in 1950 at the age of 58.<br />

FRAZEE, John Albert<br />
WWII<br />
John, son of Isaac Frazee, was born in Grand Prairie, AB, in 1925, but grew up in<br />
Brookside, NS. After enlisting, he trained as a Dispatch Rider and was assigned to<br />
the North New Brunswick Regiment. He was eventually transferred to a bren gun<br />
carrier where he was the Gunner. John died at the age of 19 from wounds suffered<br />
in Holland on October 27, 1944. He is buried in Adegem <strong>Canadian</strong> Military<br />
Cemetery, Adegem, Belgium,<br />
