Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion CURWIN, John Michael AFGHANISTAN Private John Michael Roy Curwin (March 01, 1982 – December 13, 2008) age 26 from Mount Uniacke, Nova Scotia. John was born in Halifax and grew up in Mount Uniacke. Private Curwin served with 2 nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment based in Gagetown, NB. He was a member of the Force Protection Company of the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team and was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his armoured vehicle during a security patrol in the Arghandab District west of Kandahar City. He was an avid hockey fan, a husband to his childhood sweetheart, Laura, and a dedicated father to three young children. Submitted by Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion. DAVIDSON, William Seldon WWI Seldon was born Middle Stewiacke in 1889, and was the son of Thomas and Christine (Brenton) Davidson. He was a blacksmith before signing with the 11 th Regiment of the Irish Fusiliers in New Westminster, BC, in December 1915. After the war, he returned to Middle Stewiacke for a time, then moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he married Alice Bushie. He died in Detroit in 1966. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. DAVIS, Edgar WWI Edgar, son of Solomon and Mary (Cox) Davis of South Branch, was born in 1893 and enlisted with the 193 rd Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders in 1919, serving in Canada and overseas in England and France. He fought in many areas including Vimy Ridge, Hill 70 and Passchendaele. He was wounded in 1918 causing him to lose the sight of one eye and to spend time in hospital in England. In 1921, he married Elizabeth Dickey Bates, daughter of George and Martha (Lays) Bates of Middle Stewiacke. Edgar was an active member of the community serving as an Elder and Sunday School Superintendent in the Middle Stewiacke United Church. He also served on the municipal school board for a time. Edgar passed away in 1981. Submitted by the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. DAVIS, Frederick WWI Fred was born in 1885 in South Branch, son of Solomon and Mary (Cox) Davis. He enlisted in the Canadian Army, Quebec Regiment, 42 nd Battalion and was killed in action on November 17, 1917, and is buried in Passchendaele, Belgium.
