Very indicative and enlightening on this argument is the article by Celean Jacobson
“Mirror Images: Two Teenage Girls, Bomber and Victim”, Associated Press, April 6
2002, where 17 years old Ayat Akras was compared to her equally young Israeli victim.
The same excuse was employed for the suicide attacks in Lebanon too: “... Faced with
the overwhelming military power of Israel, which is sustained and encouraged by the
world's most powerful nation, there is little the victims can do other than to strike back
randomly through individual, frequently suicidal attacks”, an article in: In These
Times, June 26-July 9 1985, quoted in McGurn, p. 88.
See, for example, Haselkorn Avigdor (2000), “Martyrdom: The Most Powerful
Weapon”, Los Angeles Times, December 3, p. 5.
In the course of the Second “Intifada”, Palestinian groups have used except of the
guerrilla warfare, a wide range of asymmetric tactics concluding in terrorism, such as of
course suicide missions, but also kidnappings, shootings against civilian populations,
the launching of mortar grenades and “Qassem II” rockets, roadside and car bombs.
Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, quoted in The Daily Star (Beirut), February 8, 2002.
Violence, quoted in Van Natta, Jr. Don (2003), “Big Bang Theory: The Terror Industry
Fields Its Ultimate Weapon”, New York Times, August 24, sec. 4, 1.
2000, 4.
PIJ leader based in Jenin quoted in Vivienne Walt, “Dying for a Cause: West Bank
Town Sees Sons Become Suicide Bomber”, Newsday, August 20, 2001, A5.
of Hamas,” Observer, August 19, p. 20.
killed by Israel in 1996, quoted by Tarik Kafala, “Analysis: Palestinian suicide attacks”,
