<str<strong>on</strong>g>Police</str<strong>on</strong>g> Acti<strong>on</strong><br />

Rescued pers<strong>on</strong>s must be produced be<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>e the Magistrate at the earliest time possible.<br />

The survivors must be segregated from the accused and the suspects. Rights of the rescued pers<strong>on</strong>s<br />

must be ensured at all times. Rights of the rescued pers<strong>on</strong>s include the following:<br />

- Ensure that the rescued pers<strong>on</strong> carries all her bel<strong>on</strong>gings including children if any – take<br />

extra care that the children are not left behind<br />

- Publicity must be avoided<br />

- Two officials should be available exclusively <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> ascertaining the age of the survivor (to<br />

decide the applicability of JJ Act)<br />

- Counselors may be provided <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> trauma counseling<br />

- Legal counseling must also be made available to the survivor<br />

- Immediate medical relief must be provided (medical examinati<strong>on</strong> as ordered by the Magistrate<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ducted to assess age, injuries, sexual assault and presence of sexually transmitted diseases)<br />

Special care needs to be taken in the case of children. They must be segregated from the adult<br />

survivors and handled by the Child Welfare Committee set up under the JJ Act.<br />

The police officers need to know be<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ehand as to where the rescue home is available. The home<br />

needs to be notified regarding the number of pers<strong>on</strong>s to be lodged and other details.<br />

It must be ensured that evidence is not destroyed or withdrawn by any<strong>on</strong>e. All police officers must<br />

be held accountable to ensure compliance.<br />

Material required : A short video depicting a rescue at the Scene of Crime (SOC) 30<br />

Methodology : Audio-visual presentati<strong>on</strong> and interactive discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

Expected outcome : Participants understand the importance of sensitive and effective rescue<br />

procedure<br />

Activity<br />

1. Show video clip<br />

2. Ask participants to resp<strong>on</strong>d to the scene, specifically identifying procedural elements as well as<br />

sensitivities that were/were not followed.<br />

EXERCISE<br />

Material required : Pre-prepared illustrati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Methodology : Presentati<strong>on</strong> of visual and discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the same<br />

Expected outcome : Participants can compare and c<strong>on</strong>trast the two given rescue scenes and<br />

discuss the distincti<strong>on</strong>s with regards to the steps taken by police in rescue<br />

operati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Activity<br />

1. Have the participants pair off and distribute the illustrati<strong>on</strong>s to each pair (2 c<strong>on</strong>trasting rescue<br />

scenarios per pair)/ or you may display the illustrati<strong>on</strong>s to the group as a whole and facilitate a<br />

group discussi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
