Summary and objectives
Final beneficiaries
In Benin, nearly 33% of households are unable to
1 600 farmers, 400 women for income generating
To improve food security for vulnerable rural and urban
140 000 inhabitants of the Savanes region (Togo) and
meet their minimum food needs. General rises in food
activities and the management of food-processing
groups in Benin and Togo in four key product areas –
500 000 in the Benin departments of Zou, Collines and
prices exacerbate the problems of poverty and dietary
units, 200 persons associated with grain banks,
rice, cassava, maize and cowpeas. The project aims to
Couffo; 10% of urban consumers (100 000 inhabit-
insuffi ciency. The dramatic levels of undernourish-
4 000 persons associated with the rural banks.
provide access to credit for producers and processors,
ants of Togo and 300 000 in Benin).
ment and malnutrition which result are testimony
to the food insecurity in Benin. The phenomenon is
more pronounced in rural areas, where most of the
population depend solely on agriculture but only have
access to small, low-yield family farms (34% of which
are smaller than one hectare). Maize is the primary
staple grain. The people are confronted with the major
problems of low crop yield, year-round fl uctuations in
food prices, low farm income and barriers to credit.
The aim of the project is to increase maize production,
raise farmers’ incomes and meet the basic food
needs of the population throughout the year.
