Families of about 250 agro-pastors and 150 fi shermen,<br />
approximately 2 500 people.<br />

About 12 000 people from rural communities of farmers<br />
and fi shermen (about 6 000 in the Buya area,<br />
5 000 on the Bure peninsula, and 900 in Irafaile).<br />

Improving food security in Debub<br />
Summary and objectives<br />
To contribute to improving the livelihoods of poor<br />
families in the Debub zone of Eritrea through<br />
improved food security, and enhanced resilience to<br />
drought and economic shocks. More specifi cally,<br />
to achieve increased, diversifi ed and integrated<br />
sustainable agricultural production in fi ve target<br />
administrative villages, through the construction/<br />
rehabilitation of water sources and irrigation systems<br />
downstream for crops and animal production,<br />
and the distribution of agricultural inputs and assets.<br />
Target groups<br />
Approximately 9 465 small-scale producers<br />
(40% women).<br />
Final beneficiaries<br />
About 175 000 persons including 80% farmers and<br />
49% women.<br />

Summary and objectives<br />
The project’s overall aim is to contribute to mitigating<br />
the negative effects of rising food prices<br />
through increased productivity for agro-pastoralists<br />
in Gash Barka. The activities include: construction<br />
of farmland terraces through cash-for-work; distribution<br />
of farm inputs and oxen, provision of tractor<br />
services; supply of small-scale irrigation equipment;<br />
distribution of sheep, dairy goats and chickens to<br />
households; and training programmes.<br />

Poor community members in two ‘sub-zobas’<br />
(districts).<br />

24 700 households (60% women).<br />

To contribute to restoring price stability in cereals<br />
and food security in the southern (Debub) region,<br />
and to strengthen productivity potential for staple<br />
cereal crops in a key food-growing area of Eritrea<br />
by increasing cereal crop production and improved<br />
seed varieties in selected areas leading to a reduction<br />
in cereal prices in local markets.<br />
Target groups<br />
10 000 households (40% are female-headed) –<br />
about 50 000 people.<br />
Final beneficiaries<br />
The 350 000 population of fi ve sub-regions in the<br />
Debub region.<br />
