“The world of wines needs more people like Doug
Tunnell. Having had a successful career as a television
news foreign correspondent, Tunnell returned to his
native Oregon and started a ‘farm,’ as he calls it. Certified
organic since 1990, Brick House Vineyards produces
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Gamay Noir (of Beaujolais
fame) that have soul. A difficult quality to describe, a
wine with soul (or ‘character’ if you prefer), is never
squeaky clean (yes, obsessive/compulsive Californian
winemakers may find hint of Brett or VA in some of
Tunnell’s wines), smells and tastes as though it was made
of the land (and not in a lab), and reveals both its terroir
and its vintage. Not all wines with soul are successful, but
when they are they can be awe-inspiring. Tunnell, a
gentle bear of a man, is dedicated to producing soulful
wines on his ‘farm’ in a manner that enhances nature, not

“The 2007 Pinot Noir Cuvee de Tonnelier is 100% Pommard clone. Medium
ruby-colored and super-fragrant, it displays aromas of cinnamon, clove, iron,
cherry, and raspberry. This leads to an elegant, medium-bodied, sweetly fruited
wine with succulent flavors (not so easy to achieve in 2007), good acidity, and
a lengthy finish. Drink it from 2010 to 2017.” Wine Advocate, rated 91/100

“The 2007 Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais is 100% Dijon clone bottled 6 months after
the Cuvee de Tonnelier in March 2009. The bouquet displays sandalwood,
violets, mineral, spice box, and assorted red fruits. More structured than its
sibling, it has plenty of layered, ripe, savory fruit, excellent balance, potential
complexity, and a long, pure finish. Drink it from 2011 to 2019.” Wine

“Light in color and texture, feeling silky and tasting of pomegranate, currant and
plum, with hints of loamy earth and rose petal on the polished finish. Drink

and strawberry jam aromas. Its flavors are savory, earthy and dark, the plushtexured

wines because of the vibrant natural acidity, is light gold-colored with an enticing
nose of honey, tropical fruits, and mineral. This is followed by a mediumbodied,
creamy-textured wine with layered, rich fruit, impeccable balance, and
a lengthy, pure finish. It is likely to evolve for 1-2 years and drink well through
