Domaine Tempier, unquestionably the best producer of
Bandol, is the province of Lucien Peyraud, an animated
elf Wine Advocate, Robert Parker called, “the most vivacious
outgoing, charming and colorful proprietor I have
ever met.” Peyraud and his wife Lulu have presided over
more than 50 vintages, now assisted by sons Jean -Marie
and Francois. Their 64-acre estate includes the two best
vineyard sites, known as La Tourtine and La Migoua,
which from very old vines yield wines well worth seeking
out for their quality and rarity. La Tourtine, dominated
by mourvedre, is a brooding, backward wine; La Migoua
is more feminine and forward. All of Peyraud’s lovinglymade,
natural wines are, as Robert Parker put it, “quintessential
Bandols, the appellations’s greatest, and revelations
to those who have not tried them.”
the most highly
esteemed winemakers
in all of France.
Their wines are
found on more two
French restaurants’
wine lists than any
Jean-Michel parce
other producer’s. Parce, an energetic and enthusiastic
promoter of the under-rated wines made from grapes
grown on the terraced, hillside vineyards of Collioure and
Banyuls, produces several cuvees of dry red wines from
the Collioure appellation, and a number of cuvees of
France’s answer to vintage port, the sweet, late-harvested
Banyuls that must be tasted to be believed. These are true
rarities, available only in very limited quantities.” Wine
2005 Napa Valley, a blend of wine from vineyards throughout the appellation,
is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit
Verdot. It has a dark garnet color and a complex nose of boysenberry, truffles,
wild game, soy, and black pepper. On the palate, the wine has a silky mouthfeel
and an elegant, long finish with a slight tannic grip. With proper cellaring it
should give drinking pleasure through 2032.
Gigondas
Domaine de Font-Sane is one of the most rewarding stops in the lovely village
of Gigondas, due in no small part to the enormous talent and gracious manner
of the Veronique Peysson-Cunty. Passed down from father to daughter, Veronique
is the 4th generation of the Peysson family to practice viticulture and
wine making at this outstanding Gigondas estate. The average age of the vines
at Font-Sane are nearly 40 years old. The youngest 20 year old vines are planted
hundreds of meters up the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. Important parcels
of 50+ year old vines are on the middle slopes. A small plot of 100 year old
vines sits adjacent to the house and cellars on more level ground. The yields are
low. The mix of grape varieties is weighted towards Grenache, but Veronique
also puts fully 25% Syrah into its blend for Syrah’s elegant aromas of dark fruit
and fresh wild green herbs and its firm structure. Lesser amounts of Cinsault
and Mourvèdre are used. Both the complexity and the balance in Font-Sane’s
Gigondas comes from the mix of 4 different grape varieties planted on 5 five
soils with every conceivable exposure and at various elevations from 150 to 350
meters. This creates an exceptionally diverse array of aromatics and structural
characteristics. In blind tastings among the growers of Gigondas, Font-Sane is
often chosen as the best of the appellation.
“…reveals sweet raspberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with notions of
flowers, cedar, garrigue, pepper, and crushed rocks. This full-bodied, lush
Gigondas should drink nicely for a decade.” Wine Advocate, rated 90-92/100
“Strongly perfumed, spicy aromas of fresh violet, raspberry, white pepper and
minerals. Bright, sharply focused red berry flavors show silky texture and no
rough edges. Finishes clean and energetic, with repeating red fruit notes. This
reminded me of a rich Pinot Noir.” Steve Tanzer, rated 91/100
