Blockbusters on a Budget
Affordable Indulgence
2007 Louis Martini Cabernet Sauvignon County (California)______ 14.97
“…blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest the other
Bordeaux varietals. An exquisite value, this is a seductive, fleshy,
fruity wine with excellent texture, body, and balance. Lots of cassis
as well as silky tannins characterize this top bargain pick!…”
Wine Advocate, rated 90/100
2007 Angel’s Landing Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley (California)_ _ 16.99
The 2007 Angels Landing Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a
big, rich wine, exhibiting aromas of dark fruits —blackberry and
plum come to mind—and cocoa. These notes carry through on
the palate, which adds in hints of vanilla and perhaps a touch of
tobacco leaf. The wine is solidly structured, with mild tannins.
The ‘07 Napa Valley Cab should hold up in the cellar for five
years or more, but is completely enjoyable at this point. One of
the best qualities of this wine is its price—just $17 per bottle! One
taste and you’ll see that it will hold its own against wines in the
$30 and up range—it is easily one of the best buys we’ve seen all year long, and
comes in at a time when a great value is highly appreciated!
2008 Borsao Tres Picos (Spain)_______________________ 16.99
“Opaque purple. Exotically perfumed bouquet of dark
berry preserves, smoky minerals, potpourri and Indian
spices, with a strong note of cracked pepper; smells like a
high-end northern Rhone wine. Very spicy and tightly
focused, offering juicy red and dark berry flavors and sexy
notes of candied flowers and cocoa powder. Finishes with
a wallop of sweet red berries and lingering, seductive spiciness; as ridiculous a
value as one can find these days. The yield for this wine was reportedly under
two tons per acre.” Steve Tanzer, rated 91/100
2007 Can Blau (Spain)___________________________ 14.99
“The 2007 Can Blau is purple-colored with a nose of cedar,
mineral, baking spices, blueberry, and black cherry. This
leads to a full-bodied wine with layers of flavor, enough
structure to evolve for 2-3 years, and a pure, fruit-filled
finish. It will be at its peak from 2010 to 2018.” Wine
Advocate, rated 90+/100
2007 Coudoulet de Beaucastel (France)_ _________________ 29.99
“The blockbuster 2007 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet,
always one of the best bargains from the south, may be
the finest Coudoulet ever produced. A blend of 30%
Mourvedre, 30% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Cinsault,
and a few other authorized varietals, is incredibly opulent
and rich, with sensational notes of black currants,
licorice, smoked herbs, and meat juices, a full-bodied
mouthfeel, savory tannins, and good acidity as well as length. This outstanding
wine can be drunk now or cellared for 10-15 years.” Wine Advocate, rated
92/100
2007 Foxglove Zinfandel (California)_ ___________________ 14.99
“The outstanding 2007 Zinfandel (86% Zinfandel and 14%
Petite Sirah) is another winner and phenomenal bargain. This is
classic Zinfandel with loads of berry fruit, pepper, earth, and
roasted Provencal herbs. The wine is pure, full-bodied, ripe, with
not a hard edge to be found.” Wine Advocate
2007 Foxglove Cabernet Sauvignon (California)_ _____________ 14.99
“ Foxglove also scores highly with their 10,800-case cuvee of 2007
Cabernet Sauvignon. A blend of all-Paso Robles fruit and composed
of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and
Cabernet Franc, the wine has a dense ruby/purple color and plenty
of black fruit intermixed with loamy soil undertones, licorice, and spice. The wine
is luscious and. medium to full-bodied , with silky tannins and a heady, opulent
finish. Drink it over the next 2-4 years, although it could last a lot longer.” Wine
Advocate
2006 Le Conseiller (France)__________________________ 27.99
“A top-notch effort from Jean-Philippe Janoueix, this blend of
90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc is a sleeper of the vintage.
Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet blackberry
and black currant fruit, licorice, earth, and camphor notes, a
fleshy, succulent mid-palate, and a ripe finish. A very good wine
from a humble appellation, qualitatively it transcends it pedigree. Excellent
value.”
Chateau Le Conseiller was purchased in 1996 by the young Jean-Philippe Janoueix
(Le Croix Saint-Georges, La Confession & Chabrun). With its exceptional soils,
and the vision of the young winemaker, this estate has brought a new level of quality
and creativity to the area.
2006 Nicholas Cole Cellars GraEagle Red Wing (Washington State)____ 24.99
A play on words, Red Wing is their proprietary blend that changes
each year. A table wine of excellent refinement, it is a Bordeaux
style wine, showcasing the best grapes the harvest has to offer. Each
bottle is carefully crafted and blended for the ultimate balance of
concentration, complexity and grace while remaining true to Walla
Walla Valley terroir. Production is extremely limited.
The 2006 GraEagle Red Wine is a Walla Walla Valley estate blend of 38%
Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot, 6% Syrah and 3% Petit
Verdot.
2007 Robert Karl Claret Horse Heaven Hills (Washington State)_____ 21.99
2007 was a warm, dry vintage in Washington. Plenty of summer heat produced
grapes with wonderful intensity, deep, dark color and great balance.
The 2007 Horse Heaven Hills Claret (red wine) is a blend of 55%
Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit
Verdot, and 5% Malbec. The fruit was sourced from their estate
vines at Gunselman Bench, Andrews Horse Heaven Ranch,
McKinley Springs and Phinny Hill vineyards. It was aged in 70% French oak and
30% American oak for 21 months, 50% of the oak was new. The ideal consumption
is 2 to 5 years from release date, but this wine will develop for another 5-7
years. The alcohol by volume is 13.5 %. This wine was bottled August 4, 2009.
2005 The Paring Red Wine by Jonata (California)_ ____________ 24.99
“Cassis, plum and grilled meat notes jump out from the glass from the
Bordeaux varieties. Hints of mushroom, strawberry, truffle and lifted
violet from the Sangiovese emerge from the wine as it sits in the glass.
Powerful nose with a complexity similar to the Sangiovese based wines
of Italy. Smoke, fruit and flowers. Smooth and generous on the palate
with black fruit and earth intermingling. Finishes with melted tannins
and a cleansing touch of Sangiovese acidity.” Matt Dees, winemaker of Jonata
2007 The Paring White Wine by Jonata (California)_ ___________ 19.99
“Honeysuckle, grapefruit peel, jasmine and mineral nuances on the nose.
Honey and bees wax. Slight hints of toasty oak. Rich and round on the
palate. Semillon gives density and weight in the mouth. Sauvignon
Blanc keeps the wine fresh, while the perfume from Viognier continues
to shine through on the finish.” Matt Dees, winemaker of Jonata
2007 The Paring Pinot Noir by Jonata (California)_ ____________ 24.99
“A dizzying array of dark chocolate, cake batter, black licorice, lifted
black cherry, plums, black pepper, thyme and cured meats. Floral and
perfumed. Velvet fruit on the entry. Plum skin. Bright red fruit and
spice dominate on the palate. Pure cherry lingers on the finish.” Matt
Dees, Winemaker of Jonata
