One of the oldest port houses,
Quinta do Noval is also arguably
the greatest. It is unique among the top houses in
that most of the ports are made from estate-grown
fruit and, notably, all of the vintage Noval wines
are from the single do Noval vineyard.
“Impressive aromas of crushed blackberry, mineral
and dried flowers. Intense and deep. Full-bodied,
very sweet and dense on the palate, with big, round
black licorice, and dark chocolate.
Conditions of Sale for Pre-1980 Vintage
Ports:
• Before 1975, Vintage Port was commonly
bottled in London, thus they may not have
what you consider to be standard labels. They
may even be typed.
• It’s common for the labels to be worn (with
scratches and/ or small tears) and have dried
stains on them.
• The capsules may be worn, slightly torn or
have dried stains on them.
• The Portuguese strip of authenticity, usually
located under the capsule, may be worn, torn
or missing.
• The bottles are commonly dusty.
• The corks are generally quite fragile and
might crumble upon opening.
• Sediment should be expected - the older the
wine, the more sediment.
• Fill levels will vary - for example a 1970
Vintage is 35+ years old thus a mid-shoulder
level is considered acceptable.
The Symington Family
Martinez was founded in 1790 by the Spaniard
Sebastian Gonzalez Martinez, who sold Port,
sherry and cigars from an office in Mincing Lane
in the City of London. In 1822 he was joined by
an Englishman, John Peter Gassiot, a Member of
The Royal Society and a great friend of Faraday
the famous scientist. By the time Sebastian
Martinez retired in 1849, the company had
become the largest shipper of Port to
the UK, with its own lodges in
Oporto acquired in 1834. Martinez
Gassiot was well known for its swift
sailing ships, the “Betsy” and the
“Maria Manuela”, which carried its
wines from Oporto to the West
Country of England. In fact it is
recorded that the “Maria Manuela”
was one of the last sailing boats
of its kind to carry Port before
this method of transport was
supplanted by the age of
steam.
Martinez produced some outstanding
Vintage Ports in the
20th Century. James Suckling
wrote in the Wine Spectator of
the 1994 Martinez Vintage
Port. “The sleeper of the vintage.
A stunning, huge, amazingly
young Port that makes
your mouth pucker in delight.
Full-bodied and medium-sweet,
with masses of fruit and tannins.
Best after 2012.” 97 out
