Wine Advocate
2008 Leonetti Merlot Walla Walla Valley
2008 is a spectacular vintage. The various Merlot grapes from different vineyards and
blocks show so well individually that the final blend ended up being comprised of 100%
Merlot. The last time they had a 100% Merlot was in the remarkable vintage of 2000, and
that wine is still drinking beautifully—speaking to the stand-alone capabilities of Merlot.
I’d be proud to serve this wine blind against any straight Merlot from anywhere in the
world, including Pomerol.
“Rich and ripe, with glazed fruit, apple tartine and fig paste
notes backed by rich texture and a long, creamy finish,
you back. Combines power and precision. Drink now
“Really enticing, with quince, pear, persimmon and fig aromas
and flavors, but it’s never heavy, just pure and refined with a
lovely, caressing finish. The acidity is really buried here—
should cruise in the cellar. Drink now through 2027.”
BOB BERTHEAU
2008 Eroica
“Eroica is the finest dry Riesling I’ve tasted from the United
States” Wine Advocate
“Eroica may well be the best dry Riesling made in the
United States…This is truly a world-class wine, capable of
holding its own with top renditions from Alsace and
Germany.” The Washington Times
“The 10th vintage of Eroica (2008) may be the
best ever.” Wine Enthusiast
“It seems as if Eroica gets more precise with each vintage.
The joint venture between Ernst Loosen and Chateau
Ste. Michelle produced a 2008 that’s simply brilliant,
its scents of Thai pineapple and passionfruit leading to
limelike flavors hurried along by rippling acidity.
There’s tension between the brisk and creamy textures,
a contrast of generosity and mineral edges.”
Wine & Spirits, rated 94/100
“It’s supremely fresh, spicy, and mineral-driven. The
well-textured mouthfeel runs the gamut from celery,
chervil and other fresh herbs into melon, citrus and
stone. Though technically off-dry, this is a low pH,
high acid wine with plenty of length and depth.”
“Ripe, rich, syrupy and seductive for its poached pear, pineapple and nougat
aromas and flavors, hinting at hazelnut on the sweet, lingering finish, which just
doesn’t quit. Drink now through 2012.” Wine Spectator, rated 92/100
2008 Chardonnay Napa Valley__________________________ 39.99
Rated 90/100, Wine Advocate
“Bright, green-tinged yellow. Candied lemon peel, resin and a minty nuance on
the floral nose. Fat and sweet, but with lovely cut to the pungent citrus and
medicinal herb flavors. A fining will reduce the bitterness of this wine and it
should develop a crème brûlée character with aging, 2008 than in 2007. Just a
hint of alcohol on the back end of this rather 2008 than in 2007. Just a hint of
alcohol on the back end of this rather powerful and uncompromisingly dry
wine…” Steve Tanzer, rated 89-91/100
2007 Chardonnay Napa Valley__________________________ 39.99
“Pretty aromas of pineapple, green apple, white flowers and mint, plus hints of
lees and butterscotch; smells like a ripe Chablis. Juicy, spicy and moderately
fleshy; quite dry but opened nicely and expanded with aeration. Comes across
as a bit more phenolic than the 2006 version but finishes with bright fruit and
good acid grip. Ric Forman picked this fruit very early in 2007 because the
grapes were “losing it above 23 degrees Brix. We need acidic grapes to retain
minerality.” Forman’s wine remains among the most consistently successful-and
ageworthy-Napa examples of no-malolactic chardonnay.” Steve Tanzer, rated
91+/100
2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate________ 3.0 liter 349.99
“The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is sweeter and more opulent,
with sweet cassis as well as much more exuberance and
flamboyance, as it was a slightly riper year, but great structure
in the mouth, terrific fruit purity, and oodles of black currant and cassis
fruit intermixed with some licorice, subtle smoke, and spice.” Wine Advocate,
rated 93/100
“2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley (includes 12% Cabernet Franc, 8%
Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot) Bright red-ruby. Aromas of crushed cassis, tar,
licorice and minerals. Sweet, lush and broad, but with harmonious acidity and
underlying minerality giving shape to the blackberry and tar flavors. This boasts
lovely sweetness without any heaviness. Finishes with big, rich, palate-dusting
tannins, very good breadth and a note of chocolatey oak. This will merit a score
at the high end of my projected range if it carries its freshness and lift into the
bottle.” Steve Tanzer, rated 91+/100
