“These are all the projects of well-known Luc Morlet, whose brother is
the principal winemaker at Peter Michael after replacing Luc himself,
who now has a consulting firm, in addition to this project under his
own family name. Not surprisingly, Luc Morlet’s Chardonnays all
emerge from old Wente clones and have a style not terribly different
from what one might expect from Peter Michael. His motto at the
winery is, ‘Quality without compromise,’ and one sees that throughout
these personality-filled wines.” Wine Advocate
2006 Corton Cuvée Docteur Peste
Hospices de Beaune Domaine Bouchard Aine et Fils_ ____________ Sale 49.97
Jean-Louis Peste was a doctor at the
Hospices de Beaune for 30 years in the mid-
19th Century. His daughter, Baronne du
Bay, bequeathed a vast estate to the Hôtel-
Dieu in his memory, in 1924.
Vineyards located in Corton-Chaumes & Voierose, which is south and
south-west facing land beside the road leading from Pernand to Aloxe, constitute
37% of this Cuvée. These vines were planted in 1976, 1982 and 1985.
Corton-Bressandes makes up the next largest constituent, with half the parcel
dating from 1940, the balance being Clos du Roy and Grèves.
The number of barrels being offered for sale in 2006 was slightly reduced
compared to previous years, following careful assessment of individual vineyard
plots.
2006 Corton Pougets
Domaine des Heritieres Louis Jadot_ _____________________ Sale 59.97
“Bright medium red. Highly perfumed nose
combines red berries, cherry, dried flowers,
spices and earth. Precise but quite tightly
wound, with an almost medicinal austerity to
its flavors of minerals, flowers, spices and mint.
Offer lovely inner-mouth perfume and verve
but not quite the volume of a top grand cru.
But this rather feminine style of Corton finishes
with excellent grip and length.” Steve Tanzer,
rated 91+/100
“Even after the bottling the nose remains highly expressive with notes of freshly
crushed berries, in particular cranberry, earth and a touch of spice that merges
into intense and mineral-infused medium-bodied flavors that turn reticent and
austere on the impressively long finish. Just as it was from barrel, this is beautifully
balanced but it remains on the grumpy side and is going to need a long
cellar snooze before it will play nicely with others. In sum, this is a Corton that
makes no concessions to the “early accessibility” mantra so many present day
wines adhere to - patience required. Tasted April 1, 2009; Drink 2018+.”
2007 La Proportion Doree _ __________________________ mag. 129.99
“One of the most profound blends of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and in this
case, 2% Muscadelle, is the 2007 La Proportion Doree (64% Semillon, 34%
Sauvignon Blanc, and 2% Muscadelle)…This is a sensational, dry, incredibly
complex wine that shows the potential that blends such as this can achieve.
Drink it over the next 4-5 years.” Wine Advocate, rated 95/100
2007 Ma Douce Chardonnay_ ___________________________ 69.99
“The 2007 Chardonnay Ma Douce displays stunning notes of poached pear,
creme brulee, honeysuckle, and a hint of tropical fruit in a full-bodied style
with terrific acidity, purity, and a background minerality. It should drink
nicely for 4-5 years.” Wine Advocate, rated 95/100
“Plump, round and deep…Rich and seemless.” Steve Tanzer, rated 93/100
2007 Ma Princesse Chardonnay __________________________ 84.99
“The 2007 Chardonnay Ma Princesse is even more impressive. This comes from
the Goldridge soils of the Russian River basin and has incredibly rich, honeyed
nectarine notes intermixed with poached pear, brioche, and spice. The wine is
full-bodied, with superb tart acid buttressing the wine’s powerful, formidable,
lean, endowed personality. The length is striking…” Wine Advocate, rated
2007 Coup de Coeur Chardonnay_ ______________________ mag. 269.99
There are only 75 cases of this selection from the three best barrels in the cellar,
and that wine has the most minerality, structure, and firmness of the three
Chardonnays, but who will ever be able to find it “ Wine Advocate, rated
“Ripe and firmly built, offering a superb combination of richness and definition.”
Mike Sullivan, Winemaker
“Benovia Estates Wines is a new small producer
of premium Pinot Noirs plus limited
amounts of Chardonnay, Syrah and
Zinfandel from vineyards primarily in the
Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast.
The winery’s ultimate goat is to produce
5,000 cases per year…The most prominent
member of the team is new winemaker Mike
Sullivan. Mike is a graduate of Fresno State
(BS in Enology) who has been in the wine industry for over 15 years, most
recently as winemaker of eight years at Hartford Family Winery. Under his
leadership, Hartford became one of California’s best producers of Pinot Noir,
Chardonnay and old-vine Zinfandel. In recognition of his skills, Mike was
named Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker, Jr. in 2002 and was
named Winemaker of the Year by Ronn Wiegand also in 2002… There are
certain Pinot Noirs that just hit you, leaving you speechless, and groping for
appropriate descriptors. When this happens, you know that you have found a
great wine. These wines were the best I tasted at Pinot Days.” PinotFile
“I have participated in so many exceptional tastings with Paul
Avril that it is difficult for me to accept that his brilliant son,
Vincent, may be eclipsing the work of his father. Vincent,
trained in Burgundy, appears to be pushing things to an even
higher level of quality… The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is one
of the two or three candidates for the wine of the vintage. An
extraordinarily great wine, the 2006 is far superior to the 2005,
which was amazing, and while made in a different style, is as
great as the 2003, and such legends as 1990 and 1978…it is
utterly profound – full-bodied and multidimensional with astonishing
purity, length, equilibrium, and intensity. This is a superb
vintage for the Avrils, and Vincent deserves huge accolades for producing a
wine of such incredible intensity and complexity. Think of Clos des Papes as a
Chateauneuf du Pape with the complexity of a top-notch grand cru Burgundy
from the Cote de Nuits.” Wine Advocate, rated 98/100
“Bright ruby. Highly expressive aromas of raspberry, cherry, lavender, smoked
meat and minerals. Racy and sharply focused, with juicy red and dark berry
flavors, silky texture and a gentle candied floral quality. Impressively pure and
balanced, with outstanding finishing clarity and lingering sweetness. Does this
ever really finish” Steve Tanzer, rated 95/100
