“Well-worth visiting, assuming one can get an appointment, is this exceptionally
impressive vineyard and gigantic fortified château-like estate owned by the
Blankiets. The vineyards were set up and the early winemaking done by Helen
Turley and her husband Jtohn Wetlaufer, but they have departed in favor of
Martha McClellan (wife of Bob Levy of Harlan estate), and of course the wellknown
Michel Rolland, who serves as outside consultant. 2005 marks the last
vintage where a separate Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were produced (I agree
100% with their decision). The Blankiets prefer to go with one
proprietary blend, which gives them the opportunity to put
together the best possible wine comprised of both Merlot and
Cabernet Sauvignon, and that’s exactly what they did in 2006.
The vineyard is known as Paradise Hills, and that’s an appropriate
name for it.” Wine Advocate
2006 Paradise Hills Vineyard____________________________ 219.99
“The real star is the nearly 1,000 case-lot of the Paradise Hills Vineyard
Proprietary Red. The dense, opaque plum/purple-hued 2006 Paradise Hills
Vineyard exhibits a beautiful, sweet bouquet of melted chocolate, burning
embers, blackberries, mocha, espresso roast, cassis, and cherries as well as stunning
concentration, and formidable, but velvety, beautifully integrated tannins.
This wine comes across like a hypothetical blend of California, a great Graves,
and something from further north in Bordeaux, such as a Pauillac. Full-bodied
and powerful, it requires 2-4 years of cellaring, and should evolve for 20-25+
years.” Wine Advocate, rated 96/100
“Vibrant, complex nose combines currant, minerals, tobacco and brown spices.
Wonderfully sweet, lush and fine-grained, with its silky texture enlivened by
compelling inner-mouth perfume. Intriguing mineral and licorice notes add to
the complexity of this very deep, layered wine, which finishes with spreading
tannins and outstanding length. Large-scaled and rather powerful but with a
lovely light touch. A superb and beautifully balanced 2006 with excellent cellaring
potential.” Steve Tanzer, rated 95/100
2006 Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard_ ____________________ 109.99
“The 2006 Rive Droite reveals elegant, attractive, plum, black cherry, coffee, and
wood spice notes offered in a lush, full-bodied style meant to be drunk over the
next 7-8 years. “ Wine Advocate, rated 90/100
“Highly aromatic nose combines mulberry, boysenberry, tobacco and flowers.
Intensely flavored and sweet, with a scented quality to the fruit-driven flavors of
ripe plum, mulberry and flowers. For all its breadth and sweetness this also
boasts excellent tannic structure and grip. .” Steve Tanzer, rated 92/100
In those appellations from the South of France (Maury,
Rivesaltes, Banyuls), there is a long tradition of producing
fortified wines. The winemaking is very similar to normal
wines but the fermentation is stopped by the addition of
alcohol to keep a sufficient sweetness (16° alc.). The winemakers
keep the best of their production of the best years
to beef up the weak vintages. These particular wines have
been undisturbed in 500 litre casks at the domaines and
only recently bottled. Deep tawny in color with aromas
and flavors of coffee, raisins, and caramel. Ready to drink
now, this is an ideal wine to savor after dinner, and
requires no decanting.
“Ken Wright is engaging and passionate about Pinot Noir
and an indefatigable champion of its Oregonian editions. He
is also almost an icon among its many producers, having
created, from scratch, no less than three brands of persistently
high reputation: Panther Creek, Domaine Serene, and
Ken Wright Cellars. At one point when Wright was the
winemaker for both Domaine Serene and Ken Wright
Cellars, those houses (which then cohabited) were simultaneously Robert M.
Parker’s choices for Oregon’s two outstanding producers of Pinot Noir.” North
“A noble grape but even more difficult to farm and produce,
Grenache is the equivalent of Pinot Noir’s more exuberant and
dramatic sibling. It has to be made from very ripe fruit in very
low yields, and generally does not like loads of new oak. A few
promising Grenaches exist in California, and they deliver
unbridled black cherry fruit with scents of licorice, lavender,
and pepper. They are usually fuller-bodied and deeper than
Pinot Noir, and just as aromatically complex.” Wine Advocate
of 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, and 5% Syrah sourced from three AVAs.
…it offers up a fragrant perfume of cigar box, lavender, sage, black cherry, and
black raspberry. Layered on the palate, it has a silky texture, layered, savory red
