2008 Chablis
“After tasting the 2008s here, it was hard to avoid concluding that William Fèvre is approaching
the level of the two pillars of the appellation, Ravenaeau and Dauvissat…” Steve Tanzer
As enchanted as his father was by Provence, Sacha Alexis Lichine,
convinced by the potential of these sun-drenched soils, became the
owner of Château D’Esclans in 2006. Since that day, he hasn’t
ceased to combine his talent and know-how to this magical terroir,
and has given a new dimension to Provence Rosé making a unique
assemblage of refinement and pleasure.
A new chapter has begun in
the world of Rosé.
“What wine goes with soul food and an extremely diverse crowd
I played it safe and offered red, white and rosé. Counting empty
bottles the next morning, it seemed that the rosé won the day. It
was Whispering Angel from Château d’Esclans in Provence, the
new project from Sacha Lichine, son of one of the 20th century’s
most influential figures in French wine. This sleek, dry rosé
offered the luscious berry fruit of old-vine Grenache, the
sophistication of St. Tropez, and the simple pleasures of
summer on the beach. I rated it 90 points, non-blind, a
perfect piece of a flawless party.” Wine Spectator
“A text book Provence rosé, this is possibly the most aptly
named wine we’ve tasted this year. Feminine and delicate,
with biscuity, strawberry notes that lure you in. It’s willowy
and crisp, with supported by firm acidity and a
clean, mineral, elegant
finish.” Decanter
“Two thumbs up. Light, bright and pleasant, it had charming aromas and flavors
of minerals, flowers and red berries. Quite refreshing and the most
straight forward of the four.” Gil Kulers
“And then there’s Corliss Estates, this year’s #1 new superstar on the
Washington scene, with a bullet…Owner Michael Corliss, a longtime
wine lover who told me that what he likes best is ‘10-to-20-
year-old Bordeaux,’ has taken a page out of the Bill Harlan playbook
by making numerous vintages before releasing the first wines
under his name. This is the most exciting new set of Washington
State wines I sampled this year…Good deep ruby-red. Fruit-driven
aromas of cassis and blueberry. Sweet and lush but much less
approachable today than the 2003 version, with its dark berry fruit
in the background. Finishes with substantial, slightly tough tannins
that will call for a good five or six years of cellaring. But then this
wine won’t be released until the fall of 2009.” Steve Tanzer
“The 2004 Red Wine is made up of equal parts Cabernet Franc,
Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot aged in 60% new oak for 28-32
months. It offers up an enticing nose of spice box, tobacco, cassis,
and black cherry. Made in an elegant style with soft tannins, this
flavorful, Bordeaux-like effort will evolve for 2-3 years and drink
well from 2011 to 2019.” Wine Advocate
2008 Chablis Vaudesir (Domaine)______________________________ 64.99
“A wonderfully energetic wine that finishes with an almost painful whiplash of
flavor and outstanding length.” Steve Tanzer, rated 93-95/100
“Extremely discreet notes of wood set off the ripest nose among these Grand
Crus in 2008 with orchard fruit and pure citrus aromas leading to impressively
precise big-bodied and powerful flavors brimming with dry extract and more
minerality than usual on the refined, intense and hugely long finish. A wine of
class and grace but with no lack of muscle.” Allen Meadows, rated 93-95/100
2008 Chablis Valmur (Domaine)_______________________________ 84.99
2008 Chablis Valmur (Domaine)_____________________________ mag. 169.99
“A great Chablis Grand Cru in the making.” Steve Tanzer, rated 94-97/100
Chablis and this 2008 is really good. 2015+” Allen Meadows, rated 93-96/100
2008 Chablis Les Preuses (Domaine)_ ___________________________ 79.99
2008 Chablis Bougros (Domaine)_ _____________________________ 74.99
“Powerful on the attack, then ample but unevolved in the middle palate, offering
lovely sweetness and intensity without any sensation of weight. Terrific
mounting minerality gives the citrus and crushed stone flavors outstanding
verve. This is still an infant.” Steve Tanzer, rated 92-94/100
“A class Chablis…” Allen Meadows, rated 92-95/100
2008 Chablis Vaulorent (Domaine)_ _ 49.99
“Big and rich but with great energy to the
citrus and powdered stone flavors. Offers
an almost painful combination of volume
and pungent freshness. This round, tactile,
fine-grained wine really perks up the
taste buds on the very lonvag, vibrant finish.”
Steve Tanzer, rated 92-95/100
“A terrific wine that could easily pass for
a Grand Cru.” Allen Meadows, rated 92-
