at its finest.”
Biodynamics. (Bio=life) + (Dynamics = in action)
Love for vines and wine and the awareness of the need
to respect the earth and its terroir have led the Maison M.
Chapoutier to adopt a biodynamic cultivation method.
This demanding technique of wine growing has become a
genuine philosophy for Maison M. Chapoutier.
Michel
Chapoutier,
the 7th
generation
to lead his
family’s firm.
An unflinching desire: ensure that soils are living and as expressive as possible.
As to propose an “appellation d’origine contrôlée” is to propose above all
an expression of the terroir. This expression, consisting in a transmutation of
mineral to vegetal, can only exist with a terroir that is in good condition, a terroir
that is alive.
Auguste Clape, Ron Junge and Pierre-Marie Clape
“The tasting I conducted in Marcel Lapierre’s
courtyard was one of the great experiences of my
life. The Gang of Four, composed of Marcel
Lapierre, Jean Foillard, Guy Breton (“Max”), and
Jean-Paul Thevenet, are capable of producing
superb, eye-popping Beaujolais. Readers with a propensity
to believe that Beaujolais is not serious wine
will find their preconceived notions shattered if they
take the trouble to taste one of these
Morgons…These Morgons are delicious
young, and can age remarkably well, as evidenced
by a recently tasted 1985 from Marcel
Lapierre. It is awesomely rich, full-flavored,
extremely complex, and has evolved better
than many of the Burgundies from the Côte
d’Or…The art for Lapierre and the other
three members of the Gang of Four is to respect the fruit. Unlike the vast
majority of their neighbors in the Beaujolais, the Gang of Four harvest moderate
yields by hand, use little sulphur, if any, almost never chaptalise, and have
never acidified. Furthermore, these wines are neither fined nor filtered…this
philosophy can lead to some of the finest Beaujolais ever crafted.” Wine
In 1990, Mike was hired to be the Head Winemaker at
Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery. Over the course of the next
nine years, he played a critical role in its development into a
world class winery. During his tenure, Chateau Ste. Michelle
was consistently recognized for the high quality of their
wines. Literally dozens of Januik-made wines have
received 90-plus scores in Wine Spectator.
(During 1997 and 1998 alone, the Wine
Spectator gave eighteen of his wines a score of
90 or above.) In 1999, Wine Enthusiast
Magazine named Mike one of the
world’s ten Masters of Merlot. And
twice in the last three years under
his guidance, Chateau Ste.
Michelle was named Winery of
the Year by Wine & Spirits
Magazine.
Auguste Clape
“Over the last quarter century, Auguste Clape
has been the spiritual and qualitative leader
of Cornas. More than any other single person,
the gentlemanly, articulate Clape has been
responsible for the renewed interest in the
wines of Cornas. His son, Pierre-Marie, is
now in charge of the winemaking at this
benchmark estate. These passionate guardians of traditional Cornas
producer magnificent, long-lived, dense, rich wines redolent with
notes of blackberries, truffles, licorice, and spring flowers. Their wines
represent Cornas at its finest.” Wine Advocate
years.” Wine Advocate, rated 90-92/100
