“In 1999, Joe Gunselman went looking for a place where he could both
manage a medical practice and indulge in a little winemaking as well. On
one of the many drives he took in Washington wine country, he was
brought to a halt on a stretch of road near Champoux Vineyard.
Something about the wind, and the way the loess puffed up around his
boots, attracted him to this area on Phinny Hill, what is now part of the
Horse Heaven Hills AVA.
The Gunselmans ran into growers Dick Beightol and Rob Mercer,
and within a few weeks they were making deals on fruit. The following
year, they planted their first block on a long-term contract.
It seems they’ve found the right spot. The Robert Karl wines display
what the Horse Heaven AVA’a southern reaches have come to be known
for: depth, plenty of power and exceptional elegance.” Wine & Spirits

Horse Heaven Hills Claret
2007 was a warm, dry vintage in Washington.
Plenty of summer heat produced grapes with wonderful
intensity, deep, dark color and great balance.
The 2007 Horse Heaven Hills Claret (red wine) is
a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot,
10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot, and 5%
Malbec. The fruit was sourced from their estate vines at Gunselman
Bench, Andrews Horse Heaven Ranch, McKinley Springs and Phinny
Hill vineyards. It was aged in 70% French oak and 30% American oak
for 21 months, 50% of the oak was new. The ideal consumption is 2
to 5 years from release date, but this wine will
develop for another 5-7 years. The alcohol by volume
is 13.5 %. This wine was bottled August 4,
2009.

At a gala dinner in Wiesbaden’s Restaurant “Ente” chief editor
Armin Diel presented Klaus Keller with the award “Winemaker of
the Decade”. Diel honoured the extraordinary achievement of the
Keller family, who practically alone built a new, better reputation for
an entire region. Brilliant performances in all categories — from red
Spätburgunder to the noble sweet Rieslaner and Riesling — are the
Keller’s trademark.

Belle Glos
Belle Glos is dedicated to the production of Pinot Noir. With the 2007 vintage,
it offers bottlings from three sites in California’s coastal growing areas:
the Sonoma Coast; Taylor Lane Vineyard, also on the Sonoma Coast Meiomi;
and the Clark & Telephone Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley and Las
Alturas Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The brand is named for Lorna
Belle Glos Wagner, co-founder of Caymus. The winemaker is Chuck’s son
Joseph Wagner.

Caymus Vineyards
Caymus was founded in the Napa Valley in 1972 by Charles F. (Charlie) and
Lorna Belle Glos Wagner with their son Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner. Chuck
Wagner continues to direct all viticulture and winemaking at Caymus, which
focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon. Caymus Special Selection is the only wine in
the world to have twice been name as Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year.

Conundr um
While Conundrum was developed at Caymus, this non-traditional white-wine
blend became an independent brand with the 2003 vintage, Conundrum’s
15th. Jon Bolta, who has crafted his wine from its debut in 1989, remains its
winemaker.

Mer Soleil
Mer Soleil, located in the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation of Monterey
County, is a partnership between Chuck Wagner and his
son Charlie Wagner II. Charlie Wagner is the winemaker
for both Mer Soleil Chardonnay and a late-harvest white
wine, Mer Soleil late, first released in fall 2002.

The origins of the Morlet family in the region of France are difficult to precisely
retrace. It is certain, though, that the Morlet family has been cultivating
vineyards in Avenay-Val-d’Or since the early 1800’s.
Today, the Morlet family vineyards are comprised of over thirty parcels totaling
forty acres in Avenay-Val-d’Or (Premier Cru), Aÿ (Grand Cru), Bisseuil
(Premier Cru), and Mutigny (Premier Cru). These vineyard blocks are situated
next to parcels that produce the super premium cuvées for such famous
Champagne houses as Bollinger, Krug, Moet & Chandon, Mumm, Pommery,
and Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin.
After four generations, Champagne Pierre Morlet et Fils has become synonymous
in France for authentic and handcrafted Champagnes. Now, wine connoisseurs
around the world are discovering the unique harmony of Pierre Morlet
Champagne.

The Grande Réserve blend is modeled after the classic base
of the Cuvée Suivie, also representing all of the Morlet family’s
terroirs of Premiers Crus Avenay-Val-d’Or, Bisseuil and
Mutigny and of Grand Cru Aÿ.
Partially fermented in French oak “Demi-Muids” barrels – a
rarity in Champagne – the Grande Réserve also aged one
additional year in the deep caves. More mature flavors and
aromas characterized the Grande Réserve which has built the
Pierre Morlet reputation.

Obtained by the “Saigneé” technique, the “Rosé Grande
Réserve” is exclusively comprised of Pinot Noir. Its
intense yet delicate bouquet is dominantly fruity (raspberry,
wild strawberries, blackberries) intermixed with
notes of limestone and hazelnut. Full-bodied and elegant,
“Rosé Grande Réserve” displays flavors of fresh raspberries
and pomegranate and a long finish with mineral notes
and a hint of Kirsch. This Rosé Champagne will age
gracefully for a decade.

The Morlet family only selects the best years to produce
their vintage Champagnes. Each of them is the result of a
judicious blend made out of some of the different family’s
terroirs and representing the characteristics of a particular
year. Therefore the proportions of both varietals as well as of
the vineyard parcels can vary from one vintage to another.
Each Pierre Morlet Champagne Millesime reflects the originality
that nature gave us in an exceptional year.
