<strong>ENEN</strong>-II<br />
The education and research activities related to nuclear engineering at UPC are developed by: 2<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essor, 9 lectures, 8 PhD researches, and 16 PhD students.<br />
The research topics are: nuclear technology, nuclear safety, environmental impact,<br />
ionizing radiation technology, radiation protection, nuclear fusion, nuclear instrumentation, particle<br />
accelerators, thermal-hydraulics, radioactive waste,<br />
non destructive evaluation, radon, dosimetry.<br />
Javier Dies, Industrial Engineering degree (energy specialty) at ETSEIB-UPC in 1985. Award First<br />
Master Thesis by Catalunya Industrial Engineering <strong>Association</strong> 1985. Received his PhD at<br />
Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 1989. PhD Award with special distinction 1989.<br />
Since 1985 is lecturer at UPC and in 2003 win the post <strong>of</strong> Nuclear Engineering Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at UPC.<br />
Contact person <strong>of</strong> the Nuclear Engineering Research Group (NERG) at UPC. Since 1995 to 2002<br />
was Sub director <strong>of</strong> Economic Affairs at ETSEIB. He is author <strong>of</strong> about 90 publications. Since<br />
1999 is director <strong>of</strong> Nuclear Engineering Section at DFEN - UPC. Contact person at UPC for <strong>ENEN</strong>.<br />
Partner 2 Middlesex University (MU)<br />
Middlesex University is one <strong>of</strong> the United Kingdoms largest universities with more than 25,000<br />
registered students. It is located on five main campus sites located close to Enfield in north London.<br />
Within the university masters-level programmes are taught that include radiological protection<br />
content and, in addition, several masters / PhD students are undertaking radiological protection /<br />
radioecology research projects. Members <strong>of</strong> staff undertake research projects in collaboration with<br />
European partners and have experience <strong>of</strong> co-ordinating FP projects.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. N. Priest is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Environmental Toxicity. He is Head <strong>of</strong> the Decision Analysis and<br />
Risk Management Research Centre and the former programme leader for the MSc Risk<br />
Management. Relevant research conducted in the areas <strong>of</strong> radiobiology and radioecology. Has<br />
previous experience <strong>of</strong> co-ordination <strong>of</strong> and participation in FP5/6 projects- including the EURAC<br />
project. Previously, was a research scientist at the National Radiological Protection Board and was<br />
the Head <strong>of</strong> Biomedical Research at the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Harwell.<br />
Dr. H. Garelick is a principle lecturer in the School <strong>of</strong> Health and Social Sciences. She is the school<br />
postgraduate programme co-ordinator in the area <strong>of</strong> public health and environmental science and has<br />
considerable experience <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> post-graduate programmes and <strong>of</strong> EU-funded<br />
education programmes, e.g., SOCRATES and ERASMUS. Her main area <strong>of</strong> expertise is in water<br />
chemistry and microbiology. Member <strong>of</strong> Chemistry and the Environment Division, IUPAC<br />
(International Union <strong>of</strong> Pure and Applied Chemists).<br />
Partner 3 University College Dublin (UCD)<br />
University College Dublin is the largest university in Ireland with over 20,000 students. Research<br />
and teaching in disciplines related to radiological protection and radioecology are promulgated<br />
within the School <strong>of</strong> Physics. This has a long history <strong>of</strong> research participation within EU FP’s and<br />
trains most Irish nuclear physics, radiochemistry and radioecology pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. It also has longstanding<br />
education provision links with other EU countries – principally Spain.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. P. Mitchell is the former Head <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Physics and is presently Director <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Radiation Physics Research Laboratory and a specialist in the field <strong>of</strong> radiochemistry and<br />
radiological protection. He is a member <strong>of</strong> EURATOM (Article 37) Group <strong>of</strong> Experts and is an<br />
<strong>Annex</strong> I <strong>Description</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Work</strong> - page 95 <strong>of</strong> 124
