The <strong>NASA</strong> Manned Spacecraft Center today notified 1Z5 employees<br />

they will be released as a result of cutbacks in the Civil Service work<br />

force at the Center.<br />

At the same time, an additional 185 employees were informed they<br />

would be reassigned or placed in jobs at a lower grade. _wenty-three<br />

employees who were to be affected by the reduction plan to resign or retire.<br />

The action came as part of a <strong>NASA</strong>-wide manpower reduction announced<br />

in<br />

Of the 198 employees leaving 155 of them have jobs at the Houston<br />

Center. The remainder work at MSC field operations at Downey, California;<br />

Bethpage, New York; White Ssmds_ New Mexico; and at the Kennedy Space<br />

Center_<br />

Florida.<br />

MSC Director Robert R. Gilruth said_ "Every effort will be made to<br />

assist employees who are being separated or reassigned to less attractive<br />

jobs through no fault of their own. We feel these people_ many of whom<br />

worked directly on the moon 1Emding program, have management and technical<br />

experience and abilities which will make them very valuable to other<br />

businesses and organizations.'<br />

MSC has set up an outpZacement center for those affected by the<br />

reduction and has invited other Government agencies and commercial firms<br />

throughout the country to interview MSC employees for new positions. In<br />

addition, working closely with the Houston Chamber of Commerce and the<br />

Texas Employment Conmmission, 300 firms in the Houston area have been<br />

contacted and invited _o inte:view <strong>NASA</strong> employees who would like to<br />

remain in this area.<br />

Interested Government agencies and business firms will begin interviewing<br />

prospective employees at the Center at the end of August, and<br />

MSC will continue intensive efforts to place affected personnel in new<br />

jobs before September 307 whe:_ layoffs and reassignments take effect.<br />
