The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has awarded<br />

a contract in the amount of $380,000 to the Ralph X. Parsons Co.,<br />

of Los Angeles_ to provide various engineering services in the<br />

development of an overall plan for space shuttle ground facilities.<br />

Associated with the Parson company in the work as subcontractor<br />

will be Booz Allen Applied Research of Silver Springs_ Md., a<br />

division of Booz_ Allen_ % Hamilton_ Inc._ of New York City.<br />

The contractor will be responsible for compiling a master<br />

catalog of facilities_ ircluding those needed for manufacture_<br />

assembly_ engine testing_ flight vesting_ launch_ and operations.<br />

As requirements for the shuttle program are identified the<br />

contractor will evaluate the need ar_ recommend a candidate site or<br />

sites to accomplish the work. Cost analysis and engineering evaluations<br />

will support each site recommendation. The final product of the contract<br />

will be a facilities mas_;er plan encompassing all _h_ses of the program.<br />

The contractor will be under the technical direction of the<br />

Space Shuttle Facilities 2roup_ which is directed by the <strong>NASA</strong><br />

Director of Facilities in <strong>NASA</strong> Headquarters_ Washington.<br />

The space shuttle !_s envisaged as a reusable launch vehicle<br />

and transport to carry people and cargo between Earth and low Earth<br />

orbit. The concept calls for airplane-like booster and orbiter stages<br />

for piggyback vertical l_mnch and separate horizontal landing.<br />
