HOUSTON_ TEXAnS--Several organizational changes have been made within<br />

the Science and Applications Directorate to enhance the Manned Spacecraft<br />

Center's scientific research capaoility and improve the implementation of<br />

science<br />

programs.<br />

Science Director Anthony J. Calio_ in announcing the changes_ said<br />

the realignment of the Directorate places increased emphasis on lunar<br />

science and earth resources. Included in the reorganization is the<br />

appointment of a Deputy Director, the establishment of three new offices:<br />

Lunar Missions Office_ Earth Orbital Missions Office and Mission Scientists<br />

0ffice_ and the realignment of two divisions: Earth Resources Division and<br />

Lunar and Earth Sciences Division.<br />

Named to the post of Acting Deputy Director for Science and Applications<br />

is Robert O. Piland_ 42. Piland_ who has been with the <strong>NASA</strong> for 23 years<br />

and has held several management positions at MSC_ has most recently been<br />

Chief of the Earth Resources Division.<br />

The Lunar Missions Office will provide a project management and<br />

mission planning focus within the Center for lunar scientific investigations<br />

and experiments. John Zarcaro, formerly of the Apollo Spacecraft Program<br />

Office_ has been named Manager of the Office.<br />

The Earth Orbital Missions Office will be responsible for program<br />

management_ mission planning and operations focused on near-earth scientific<br />

investigations. Allen H. Watkins_ formerly with the Earth Resources Division<br />

has been named Manager of the Office.<br />
