Dr. Richard Kurz of the Science and Applications Directorate at MSC<br />

heads up the CRISP scientific team fcr <strong>NASA</strong> and Arthur O. Korn is AFCRL's<br />

Flight Test Director for CRISP.<br />

The CRISP balloon and payload--which will stand 997 feet tall-- will<br />

be launched from Holloman Air Force Base_ New Mexico_ and prevailing winds<br />

are scheduled to carry the drifting balloon and gondola eastward on a course<br />

across several southern states at a 20-mile high altitude.<br />

Iq is scheduled for lift-off at approximately 11:00 p.m. MST (10:00 p.m.<br />

CST). It will require 2½ hours for the payload to reach design altitude of<br />

108_OO0 feet where prevailing winds will move the package easq}_rd for<br />

approximately 12 hours. Fecovery is scheduled for 12 noon CST the following<br />

day.<br />

The exact recovery tscation depends on the speed of the prevailing<br />

winds.<br />

The mammoth balloon is a two-part interconnected system with main<br />

balloon surmounted by a sheller launch balloon. Both balloons are made<br />

of mylar<br />

scrim.
