HOUSTON, TEY_S---R. Bryan Erb, former manager of Lunar Receiving<br />

Laboratory (LRL), has been named to the position of Manager of the<br />

Applications Office at MSC's Earth Observation Division.<br />

The promotion to the newly established office includes responsibility<br />

for the development and application of remote sensing techniques and<br />

direction of the sensing program at the Houston test site.<br />

Prior to his new assi=_nment, Erb served both as assistant manager<br />

and manager of the LRL. He held those positions during the historic<br />

Apollo 11 and 12 missions. He was responsible for the operation of the<br />

laboratory in the functions of crew quarantine, biological containment<br />

and scientific testing of returned lunar samples.<br />

Erb entered <strong>NASA</strong> in May_ 1959 as an aerospace technologist. His<br />

early assignments included assessment of heating on the Mercury spacecraft.<br />

He also studied thermal protection and research on spacecraft during<br />

the Gemini and Apollo pro,rams.<br />

Special honors to Erb include the Athlone and Sloane Fellowships.<br />

He is a member of the Amezican Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics<br />

and the Ontario_ Canada Pzofessional Engineers.<br />

Frb's education includes degrees from the University of Alberta_<br />

Edmonton_ Canada; from th_ College of Aeronautics, Cranfield, England<br />

and from the Massachusett_ Institute of Technology, Cambridge.<br />
