Ph.D and M.Tech Programme
Ph.D and M.Tech Programme
M. Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering
(Communication)
Ph.D Programme
The doctoral research programme is carried out in the Institute. This year a student has submitted his Ph.D
thesis to WBUT under the supervision of Professor B. N. Biswas in the field of Electronics and Communication
Engineering (Annexure BI) while five other students registered in various other universities (including
Calcutta University and Jadavpur University) under him are on the verge of submitting their theses. The
other faculty members are also either supervising or carrying out doctoral research.
Post Graduation: A Need of the Hour
It will never be possible to teach everything required for a 21st century engineer in a 4-year graduate
engineering course. As such it has been generally agreed in the world forum that a 4-year engineering
course be followed by a 2-year master’s programme in an environment of Ph.D and R & D activities.
In line with the essential need, SKFGI, among the premier Institutes, has ceaselessly attempted and become
successful to introduce the M. Tech program in the academic session 2012-2013. In its glorious start, we
offer M. Tech programme affiliated to WBUT and approved by AICTE in the following disciplines:
Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) - Intake: 18
Electrical Devices and Power Systems (EE) - Intake: 18
Engineering: Comprehensive Thoughts
Introduction
We humans are wonderful communicators because
of a unique inheritance of our species. However,
human communication practice did not change
rapidly in prehistoric and ancient times in spite of
our ceaseless quest for sharing thoughts and ideas
with our neighbours [Communication ‘Communico’
(Latin) meaning ‘to share’]. The progress of society
(essentially people in communication) depends on
the dissemination of information (i.e. using
communication technique). Communication
innovations were very slow in those days as
compared to those in the last 100 years. The need
and importance of communication system as well
as its progress was beautifully illustrated in the cover
page of an IEEE communication magazine. This is
illustrated in the adjoining diagram (Fig.1). The danger
of a flying pterodactyl is disseminated by beating a wooden plank with the help of bones. This also signifies
our inability to overcome the barrier of distance and time in those days, whereas in modern times it is done
with the help of satellite communication technique. This demonstrates the death of distance and time in
establishing a communication link.
