Guidelines for Parking Management
Parking design is governed by a number
of standards which allows consistency
to be achieved Australia-wide.
National Standards
The design and management of onstreet
parking spaces is governed by
Australian Standard 22890.5 Part
5 On-Street Parking Facilities. This
standard sets dimensions for various
forms of on-street parking including
angled parking and parallel parking.
Design Standard, Guide to Traffic
Engineering Practice Part 11
Parking provides guidelines on onstreet
and off-street parking. The
standard sets dimensions for the
various parking layouts in on-street
and off-street car parks and also provides
guidelines on methods to survey parking
usage, setting parking policies and
management of parking controls.
Australian Standard 1742.11 lists
the complete range of parking control
signage and pavement markings in the
area of parking management.
Design standard, Australian/New
Zealand 2890.1 Part 1 Off-Street
Parking Facilities provides guidelines
on the design of off-street car parks.
This standard is used in particular
for assessing car parks proposed in
development applications.
Design standard, Australian
Standard 2890.2 Part 2 Off-Street
Commercial Vehicle Facilities
provides guidelines
on the design of servicing and
loading areas of land uses. This
standard is used particularly for
assessing servicing requirements
of loading areas proposed in
development applications.
Australian Road Rules lists the legal
requirements on traffic and parking
matters. It clearly sets out the parking
requirements for all situations in onstreet
areas.
State Standards
The Code of Technical Requirements
for the Legal Use of Traffic Control
Devices governs the use of parking
controls in South Australia. Through
Ministerial delegation, some of the
parking controls can be installed
by Council without DTEI or
Ministerial approval.
Council Practices
The Development Plan sets parking
requirements for various forms of land
uses for new developments.
The City also has a number of policies
in relation to parking management.
