Editor’s letter
Light and Delight
I’m just thrilled when, during an interview, the person I’m listening
to throws a light switch on in a long hall of doors in a house
I thought I knew.
I sail. But listening to Alex Thomson describe life alone in the
open ocean out of sight of land, racing back to his wife and
young son during the Vendée Globe round the world yacht
race, fortitude and adventure had a name, for a moment, and a
smile and a British accent. Catch him on page 48 in “Round the
World in 80 Days.”
I’m a pretty hard worker and a spiritual person, but sitting
down with Huang Ch’ing-hsien’s story package sent post haste
from Taiwan, what I saw most was the tenacity it took for someone
with no academic background to cultivate such astounding
hands-on knowledge of his country’s ecology. (I’m always
inspired by adults who try new things and persist at them. This
particular example has some beautiful results.) What he said
about following the Tao, finding nature’s way and Falun Dafa
fed my spiritual side some beautiful surprises, too. Read “Mountain
Sanctuary” on page 42.
Few Westerners wander into the modern day courtyards of
Chinese people who devote themselves the way only they can
to art or business or media made the way only they can make it.
I wandered in. Dominic Gurney, founder of de Gournay, did too,
albeit 30 years before me when he went to Shanghai to revive a
lost tradition. The man has a knack for storytelling. His conversation
unrolls just like his wares: artistic, joyful, vivid. Enjoy it for
yourself on page 62 “Gorgeous De Gournay”.
Ed Richardson, retired engineer, now 103 years young, illuminated
what it was like to help turn the little outpost of West
Vancouver into what it is today. He is one of life’s libraries and I
have a feeling we’ll see him again on our pages soon. Check out
“Life Unfurling,” (page 86) for the story.
A big thank you to all of our interviewees and to our readers
who are the source of our inspiration. I look forward to knowing
what you think of this edition of Taste of Life.
Best Wishes,
