n a chilly day last winter, 20 high-performance sailboats
pushed off from the south of France, shot
past South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, past South
America’s Cape Horn, across the treaturous Southern Ocean
and past the place where a previous year’s participant was lost
and never found. Unharmed, they steered north again and
raced back to France toward cheering crowds that had been
following their satellite dispatches breathlessly until the day the
winners touched land for the first time in four months.
Alex Thomson of the UK (pictured in the previous spread
doing the famous “keel walk” on his boat, the Hugo Boss, a
dangerous stunt he executed in January, 2012, that earned him
the title of Britain’s “real life James Bond”) was one of those
winners who sailed alone around the world nonstop without
assistance. He completed the race known as the Vendée Globe
in only 80 days, 19 hours, 23 minutes, and 43 seconds, a feat
that earned him third place and shattered the previous British
record by 8 days. The Vendée Globe takes place once every
four years and is considered the Everest of sailing.
“In my mind, it’s the single most difficult sporting challenge
out there,” Thomson told Taste of Life, citing that
more people have climbed Mount Everest and have gone
into space than have attempted to race around the world
alone without touching land. Only about half of the contenders
who start the race, each one a well-funded athlete
devoted to the sea, finish it.
“The boats are just machines. It’s been 10 years and I still
find them astounding,” Thomson says.
Boats like Hugo Boss, named for its menswear sponsor, push
engineering advancements to the edge of possibility. It’s a wonder
then that most who drop out of the race do so due to
mechanical failures rather than exhaustion or mental collapse.
