How Big Is the
Grand Canyon?
The main expanse of the
canyon is 446 km (277 mi)
long, as measured by the
river flowing through it. At
the deepest point, that river
is about 1800 m (6000 ft)
below the rim on the north
side, and at the widest point,
the chasm stretches 29 km
(18 mi) across. The national
park that encompasses the
canyon is four times the size
of Greater New York City.

When to go: The summer
months can be hot and
crowded, but the weather
in spring and fall is less
predictable. Because of the
high altitude, snow is common
along the rim during
winter, but the interior of
the canyon is always warmer.

You can catch a helicopter from the South Rim
if you’re already visiting the canyon, or you can
fly directly from the airports in Las Vegas, Phoenix,
and Flagstaff. Most schedule in a touchdown
in a remote location where you can picnic, take
photos, and be away from the crowds of Grand
Canyon Village.
For the surreal experience of peering straight
down into the canyon without flying, visit the
Skywalk in Grand Canyon West, which is privately
owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe.
It’s a glass horseshoe-shaped bridge that lets you
skywalk 1200 meters above the canyon floor.
From Within
While a flight above the canyon provides perspective
on how grand it is, a trip down into it demonstrates
how small you are. Both are incredible
experiences.
The Colorado River is the sculptor of this
natural wonder, and from the South Rim, you
can’t even see it. Over the last six million years,
the river’s winding path has carved through the
stone, revealing layer after layer of the region’s
geological history.
How to get there: Fly to Las
Vegas, Nevada or Phoenix,
Arizona. From there, if you
are doing an organized tour
like a rafting trip, the tour
company will often arrange
everything for you. If you
are on your own, rent a car
and drive a few hours. Finding
your way around is fairly
easy since there are very
few roads that cut through
this desert paradise.
Where to stay: Book early
because everything fills up
during peak season, including
campsites. There are
a number of lodges in the
park. Some are right on the
rim, and, if at all possible, try
to get a room with a view
out over the canyon. The
sunrise will change your
life. There are also hotels in
Tusayan, just 7 miles outside
the village, and of course,
camping is always an option
(the only option inside the
canyon).
What to bring: Hiking shoes
are a necessity and so is
sunscreen in the warmer
months. If you plan on taking
any hikes longer than an
hour, you need a backpack
with food and lots of water.
Try a Camelbak which is a
backpack with a water bladder
built into it and a mouthpiece
that makes constant
hydration a snap.

You can hike down to the river from the Grand Canyon
Village on well-trodden paths, but it is no walk in the
park. Most people take a full day to walk down, camp that
night, and another full day to walk back up, which can be
a challenge even for experienced hikers. If well prepared,
though, people of all ages can make the trek.
Hiking down and back is the best way to experience the
Grand Canyon on its own terms. There is one more way,
however, to get a view from within the canyon that provides
a totally different experience: take to the water.
Discover waterfalls, lush pockets of forest, and ancient
Indian ruins that are only accessible by boat. The river also
holds its own beauty, and if you’re adventurous, the whitewater
rapids are more exciting than a roller coaster.
A number of companies offer raft trips ranging from
three days to a week and a half. You can choose between
smaller rafts that are more exciting and require you to do
a lot of paddling yourself, larger rowing rigs that are more
stable, and extra-large motorized rafts that free you up to
just sit back and marvel.
