Section 75 <strong>of</strong> the NI Act 1998<br />
This is commonly called Section 75. It obliges public authorities to actively promote<br />
equality <strong>of</strong> opportunity for people who differ under nine categories:<br />
Religious<br />
Beliefs<br />
Political<br />
Opinion<br />
Race<br />
Age<br />
Marital<br />
Status<br />
Sexual<br />
Orientation<br />
Gender<br />
Ability/<br />
Disability<br />
Whether<br />
they have<br />
dependants<br />
or not.<br />
They are also obliged to promote good relations between people <strong>of</strong> different religious beliefs,<br />
political opinion <strong>and</strong> race.<br />
In practice, Section 75 means that public authorities must develop equality schemes <strong>and</strong><br />
must make sure that their policies promote equality for people in all the nine categories.<br />
Local councils have Good Relations Officers who work to promote good cross community <strong>and</strong><br />
intercultural relations.<br />
Note: These 9 categories include some groups <strong>of</strong> people not covered by the Anti-Discrimination/<br />
<strong>Equality</strong> legislation, for example people with dependents, divorced, widowed <strong>and</strong> single people.<br />
