The Illinois River <strong>and</strong> many of its tributaries began to rise above flood stage on May 14th due to excessive amounts of rain over<br />

the Illinois River basin in the first 14 days of May. The flooding continued into June as even more rain fell over the area in the<br />

last half of May <strong>and</strong> first part of June. No damage was reported in Peoria County, however, two people had to be rescued when<br />

the raft they were floating on in Kickapoo Creek capsized <strong>and</strong> the flood waters carried them downstream for a ways. The two<br />

people <strong>and</strong> one recue worker were taken to a nearby hospital where they were treated <strong>and</strong> released. Numerous homes ni<br />

Woodford, Tazwell, Fulton, Mason, Schuyler, <strong>and</strong> Cass Counties were damaged or destroyed by the flooding along the Illinois,<br />

Spoon, <strong>and</strong> LaMoine Rivers. In Schuyler County, one man was sweptoff the road in his car on May 19 where the LaMoine River<br />

the roadway. He escaped <strong>and</strong> was rescued the next morning from a little isl<strong>and</strong> area in the flood waters. Another man ni<br />

Schuyler County nearly drowned on May 19 when he went onto the flood-swollen LaMoine River to test the motor on his fishing<br />

boat. The boat capsized <strong>and</strong> the man reportedly grabbed onto some low-hanging tree limbs <strong>and</strong> waited for help. He was rescued<br />

a little while later. Also, numerous farm fields <strong>and</strong> roads were flooded throughout the Illinois River Basin.<br />

Heavy thunderstorm rains dropped three to four inches of rain over a large portion of central Illinois in a short amount of time.<br />

The heavy rains caused flash flooding of small streams <strong>and</strong> closures to flooded roads. There were several reports of flooded<br />

basements in Menard <strong>and</strong> Logan Counties. The Lincoln Developmental Center, GTE Phone Center, <strong>and</strong> several homes in the<br />

Lincoln Lakes subdivision in Logan County experienced major flooding, causing over $2 million in damage. Several roads in<br />

Macon County were washed out causing $80,000 in damage. Two people were injured in Schuyler County around 2130 CST<br />

when a man <strong>and</strong> his 4-year-old daughter were washed out of their vehicle when the road on which they were driving was washed<br />

away. The father was able to pull his daughter to safety <strong>and</strong> both only sustained cuts, scrapes, <strong>and</strong> bruises from their ordeal.<br />

Also, the rain in Schuyler County caused flooding to numerous basements throughout the county, washed out a section of the<br />

old city water line in the city of Rushville, <strong>and</strong> caused a mud slide onto Route 24 near Sugar Creek. Panther Creek in Woodford<br />

County flash flooded in the town of Roanoke, flooding some basements <strong>and</strong> several businesses in the area.<br />

A downburst damaged a garage on one house in the Panther Creek Subdivion then moved to the east, knocking down numerous<br />

trees <strong>and</strong> causing some siding <strong>and</strong> roof damage to several homes. It also blew down a barn where several antique cars were<br />

stored <strong>and</strong> destroyed an uncompleted room addition on one house in Rochester. Damage was estimated around $300,000.<br />

Morgan County<br />

A couple of trees were blown down <strong>and</strong> a garage <strong>and</strong> home sustained some minor damage. No damage estimate was available.<br />

Macon County<br />

A Decatur Sanitary District storage building was destroyed by thunderstorm winds. Four detached garages were blown down<br />

<strong>and</strong> three businesses had minor roof damage. Also, numerous trees <strong>and</strong> power lines were blown down. Damage was estimated<br />

around $135,000.<br />
