Auckland / Hahei<br />

Arrive into the ‘City of Sails’ and settle in, maybe shoot up the Sky<br />

Tower or hang out at the harbour. Start the following day with a<br />

wind-whistling cycle through the rugged Karangahake Gorge, and<br />

from here, travel by bus to Hahei on the Coromandel. Walk around<br />

the golden sands and soaring arches of iconic Cathedral Cove, getting<br />

into your togs to dig a natural Jacuzzi on Hot Water Beach. (B)<br />

Rotorua<br />

Heading to Rotorua, the steaming geothermal heart of the Northland,<br />

opt to whitewater raft, mountain bike or soak in the hot springs.<br />

That evening, visit a historic Maori village for a night of fearsome<br />

warrior dances, music and an earth-cooked Hangi dinner. (B, D)<br />

Tongariro National Park<br />

Hike NZ’s most famous one day walk - the 19km Tongariro Crossing.<br />

Traverse across volcanic terrain, skirting live volcanoes and craters<br />

filled with vividly-coloured lakes. Spend that night at a mountainside<br />

ski lodge, soothing any tired muscles in the sauna. (B)<br />

Whanganui River Camp / Snowy Waters Lodge<br />

Canoe a 31km stretch of NZ’s third-longest river, pulling in at a<br />

riverside camp deep in Whanganui NP. Eat dinner sourced from the<br />

wild and bed down for the night. The following morning, swap canoes<br />

for jetboats and surge downriver. Walk to the Bridge to Nowhere and<br />

enjoy a hot shower and well-deserved tucker at the lodge. (2B, 2L, 2D)<br />

Wellington<br />

<strong>Travel</strong> south to New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, which has a<br />

gorgeous location on a perfect natural harbour. Visit the fascinating<br />

Te Papa interactive museum and hit the town for one last night. You<br />

Christchurch / Franz Josef<br />

From Christchurch, travel over the famous Arthur’s Pass and down<br />

onto the West Coast. Around almost every corner there’s a new<br />

picturesque backdrop to soak up so keep your camera handy!<br />

Discover local history at Bushman’s Centre then bed down tonight<br />

within a cosy rainforest lodge at Franz Josef. Spend Day 2 wandering<br />

the many walking trails around this magnificent glacier or opt for a<br />

guided trip to get up close to this icy wonder. (B, D)<br />

Franz Josef / Makarora / Queenstown<br />

Admire the breathtaking scenery as you head down the coast towards<br />

Mount Aspiring National Park. Visit a waterfall and travel over a<br />

spectacular alpine pass before arriving at the National Park where<br />

you can get involved with the many activities on offer. Embrace your<br />

inner thrill seeker within the adventure capital of Queenstown on<br />

Day 4 and enjoy two full adrenalin-pumping days. Throw yourself off<br />

Bungy Bridge, out of a plane and into the raving restaurants, pubs<br />

and live music of this lively nightlife town. (2B, D)<br />

Queenstown / Doubtful Sound / Central Otago<br />

Leaving the city behind, get back to nature with your first port of<br />

call, Fiordland National Park. Discover the untouched beauty and<br />

natural wonder of Doubtful Sound and board a purpose built boat<br />

which will double up as your home for the night. With the help of a<br />

nature guide, keep a lookout for seals, penguins and dolphins or head<br />

off on your own mini adventure by sea kayak. Leave your boat behind<br />

on Day 8 and head through the stunning Otago Region. (B, 2D)<br />

Central Otago / Rangitata / Christchurch<br />

Grab a mountain bike and ride the Otago Gold Mining Trail before<br />

sharing stories around at campfire at Rangitata. An express train<br />
