DISTRICT SDMI CONVENTIONMonday, July 25, 2011The South Carolina Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries Conventionconvened on Monday, July 25, 2011, at 1:15 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene inColumbia, South Carolina.Stefanie Fuller led the delegation in praise and worship, “Because WeBelieve.”Dr. Jim Thrower welcomed the delegates and made announcementshighlighting reports and advertising ideas. He noted that workshops would beavailable that afternoon. He also reported that a check was received from the Ladies’Retreat to be used in Children’s Ministries.Dr. Thrower continued with an announcement regarding the Mid-YearRally to be held in January 2012 with guest speaker, Pastor Kerry Willis.Secretary, Rev. Brenda Turner, set the order of the day, established thevoting bar, and called the Board of Tellers. She named Eddie Felder as chairman.The Board of Tellers was as follows: Lisa Jeffcoat, Vickie Jones, Bill Dixon, AnnCockrell, Joy Klotzle, Jonathan Brock, Lewis Ray, David Deese, Lisha Segur, andNell McGee.Dr. Jim Thrower read both ballots and made a motion to adopt both ballots.The motion was seconded and unanimously carried. The ballots were distributed.Dr. Eddie Estep addressed the convention and announced the specificworkshops that would be available that afternoon. He then presented Dr. JimThrower to give the Chairman’s Report for South Carolina Sunday School andDiscipleship Ministries International.Dr. Thrower delivered his report to the convention. He praised the efforts ofthe Mid-Year Rally. He said that our mission is clear: “Making Christlike Disciples”– and that responsibility falls on all of us, not just pastors and teachers.He then continued with a statistical report noting a decrease in attendanceand responsibility lists. This was followed by awards received by Honor Churches,Superior Churches, and Exceptional Churches.He continued his report expounding on three essential elements as achallenge for the new year:1. We must be intentional about making disciples.2. We must be passionate in our presentation of the gospel.3. We must be faithful examples of what discipleship looks like to those weare entrusted to teach.Dr. Eddie Estep again briefly addressed the Convention.Janice Lee delivered the SDMI Treasurer’s Report for the year ending May31, 2011. The 2011–2012 SDMI Budget was also presented. Dr. Jim Thrower asked121
for a motion to adopt the report, which was made, seconded, and unanimouslycarried.Rev. Dana Bays gave his report for Children’s Ministries by showing avideo of the various Children’s Camps. He thanked Lynn Regan, the QuizzingDirector, and Rev. Pennye Duncan, Talent Festival Director. He also thanked theChildren’s Camp Directors, Rev. Brenda Turner and Rev. Pennye Duncan, whoserve with him.Rev. Bill Watts gave his report on Adult Ministries by showing a videoincluding the Ladies ‘ Retreat and Singles’ Retreat.Dr. Thrower noted a letter he received from Donna Able commending theSouth Carolina <strong>District</strong> for the CLT Training, obtaining 1,689 credits for the2010-2011 year.Rev. Brenda Turner announced that 177 ballots were cast and announcedthe results. The results for the election of the SDMI Ministerial and LayRepresentatives were given. A total of 177 ballots were cast for the MinisterialRepresentative. The results were as follows: Rev. Scott Crandall received 53 votes,Rev. John Griggs received 72 votes, and Rev. Dan Swan received 52 votes. Rev.John Griggs was declared elected as the Ministerial Representative. A total of 177ballots were cast for the Lay Representative. The results were as follows: MikeBolling received 37 votes, J. B. Hucks received 84 votes, and Christina Morsereceived 56 votes. J. B. Hucks was declared elected as the Lay Representative.A motion was made to receive the election results.
