2.2. The Bauwerk Wood-Index
With Bauwerk there is no confusing mix of many different and ambiguously
defined grading classifications. We categorize the grading in an easily
understandable and clearly arranged numbering system. Number 1 describes
calm and smooth strips or floorboards with mainly vertical tree rings. Number
5 on the other hand stands for more natural looking strips or floorboards,
e.g. horizontal tree rings, strong texture, lively colours, knots, storage cells or
splints (= water-bearing capillary). The numbers in between stand for strips
and floorboards with an increasingly vital and natural appearance.
The structure, size and appearance of these characteristics diverge between
the wood types. Therefore the Bauwerk Wood-Index has described and
specified the categories 1 to 5 for each wood species.
For example: Unopark Oak 12 contains parts with very consistent structure
(1) and with a calm and smooth appearance (2), hence classifying it grade 12.
A grading with a Wood-Index 15 would allow all possible occurring grading
descriptions.
The gradings from 1 to 3 usually contain parquets from the GALA collection.
Grades from 3 to 5 belong to the VITA collection. Floors that are only available
with the grade 14 are classified by their main characteristics: brushed,
chamfered and oil treated parquet floors are generally part of the VITA
collection.
2.2. Formats, pattern and laying direction
It goes without saying that the appearance of the parquet floor also depends
on the format of the element, on the chosen laying pattern and on the laying
direction.
Basically there are the following possibilities:
