The core piece of the study is, apart from a precise description of the area
covered by the analysis, the exact determination of all the substance and
energy flows (see Fig. 1) caused by the chosen functional unit (1m2
 parquet
with a life-span of 45 years).
Observed are the following: Mosaic bonded parquet, 2-layer prefinished
parquet and 3-layer prefinished parquet. The life-cycles and the resulting
substance and energy flows of each type of parquet have been evaluated.
The most important specifications for the examined parquets have been
displayed in Chart 1.
The
data inventories for different stages of the life-cycles for each of the three
types of parquet have been compiled with the particular manufacturers and
external suppliers and are complemented with approved eco-inventories from
the
manufacturing’s previous and subsequent processes.
With these data inventories the eco-balance software EMIS (Carbotech 1996)
calculates all emerging emissions in the floor, air and water throughout the
entire life-cycle as well as the use of resources, the deposited wastes and
the consumption of renewable and non-renewable energy sources (Life cycle
inventory analysis, Chart 2).
