4. PARQUET AND ENVIRONMENT
Please see Ch. 14 for further
information about the certification of
Bauwerk products.
Wood from
well managed
forests.
. Parquet and environment
.1 Ecobalance
An analysis conducted by the “Eidgenössische Materialprüfungs- und
Forschungsanstalt EMPA” (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing
and Research) in Dübendorf about the environmental influences of parquet
floors over their whole life-cycle reached the following conclusions:
3 Parquet profits from the positive basic characteristics of wood, which is
considered to be the raw material of the future, due to its sustainable
availability and its resource-friendly method of production.
3 The woods double function as raw material and energy source allows
a nearly complete energy recovery. In this way around 20 to 50 % of
the energy used in parquet production can be provided during its natural
life-cycle by regenerative energy resources.
3 Wood is CO2-neutral, with hardly any greenhouse effect.
3 Today, by applying UV- cured and water-based lacquer and dispersion
adhesives there is almost no environmentally challenging emission of
solvents.
3 The long lifetime of parquet has a positive effect on the evaluated
environmental aspects.
As you can see, parquet is clearly the best choice and the environmentally
friendliest solution for flooring!
.2 Sustainable forestry
Working with wood means taking on responsibility. Wood is the most
important naturally regrowing raw material and it is considered to be the
construction material of the future. Depletion and illegal deforestation
eliminate this basis for future generations. This is why assuming responsibility
for sustainable forestry is elementary to the wood-processing industry.
Considering ecological aspects it is even vitally important.
Purchasing raw wood from sustainable sources (e.g. FSC, PEFC) has been
very important to Bauwerk for years – in line with the ISO 14001 certificate
and our company’s strategy.
. FSC, PEFC and other certificates
Various approved certificates such as FSC, PEFC, Q-Label (CH), CSA (Canada)
and AFTS (USA) as well as a consistent Chain of Custody guarantee for legally
traded wood from sustainable forestry. On this basis it is one of our goals to
achieve a leading environmental standard for all our parquets. Woods from
within the EU are regarded to be sustainable and are largely PEFC certificated.
We are currently trying to achieve the environmental friendly FSC Label for all
our exotic and overseas wood. Today, this product line is (apart from the 100%
FSC certified woods), already mostly FSC Mixed certified (Wood from FSC
attested sources in combination with wood from revisable and sustainable
sources).
. Bauwerk’s environmental commitment
Due to the consistent application of solvent-free lacquer and adhesives,
the high degree of recycling throughout the entire production process, the
technically highest-possible prevention of emissions and the high level of
safety for personnel and environment, Bauwerk has been awarded with
the environmental and safety certificate ISO 14001 for many years. The
implementation of strict regulations when purchasing raw wood and trading
goods is an important element of our vision statement and our business
principles. The Bauwerk parquet assortment comes from sustainable
forestries with officially approved certificates.
