Care of the ElderlyEach group has different problems, both apparent and hidden. A thorough study can only revealthe specific approach to these problems. However, the idea that old age is a time of ailments andphysical infirmities is deeply rooted in Indian culture. The elderly accept physical troubles andlimitations as natural and inevitable.The trends in the size and growth rate of the elderly population in India reveal that gerontologywill become a major social challenge in the future when vast resources are needed to support,care, and treat the elderly. Therefore, it is time to adopt suitable policy measures to minimizethe problems of elderly in the country. The following are some of the measures suggested toimprove the health status of the elderly in India.l Health education for the elderly should be an important aspect of their health care, so thatthey could learn certain “dos and don’ts” related to different diseases and inculcate these intotheir behaviour to prevent the occurrence of diseases or reduce the effects of illnesses.l There is a necessity to train both indigenous and allopathic doctors to handle the specificillnesses associated with ageing.l It is necessary to establish subsidized health care for the elderly with special units inhospitals and with free or highly subsidized medicines. Subsidized health care would alsorepresent an indirect transfer of resources to the family.l Creation of special geriatric wards in major hospitals and the establishment of specialcounters and geriatric out-patient units in existing hospitals will greatly help the elderly.l Social gerontology needs to be a part of the syllabus for medical professionals and paraprofessionals,so that they integrate health education along with the health care provided tothe elderly persons.l A proper coordination between health care and welfare measures needs to be attempted forthat would be most cost-effective as well as more efficient.l Irrespective of their health status, a majority of the elderly, especially those who are poor, areworking full time, mainly to earn a living. Thus, there is a need to introduce communitybased,income-generating schemes for the benefit of the elderly poor.l Among the elderly poor, the lack of food may be a major factor responsible for reduced intakeand consequent poor health. Thus, supplementary nutrition programmes targeting theneedy elderly in poor localities may be considered a priority to help them improve theirhealth status.l Use of appropriate aids, regular medical check-ups, and intake of medicines among theelderly poor is almost absent, in spite of their requirement from a health point-of-view.Therefore, local NGOs working even on other social issues of society may regularly interactwith the elderly of their community and see that the benefits reach them in time.l Community members must be sensitized to the problems of the elderly for greatercommitment to and involvement with the elderly.202
