Standard Three 41<strong>College</strong> Diversity<strong>College</strong> staff make a special effort to reach out to all groups within theservice district. This is done by participation at community festivals andfairs, and planning activities on campus to educate members of the<strong>College</strong> and the community on diversity issues. Activities includespeakers, music and cultural groups, and our own students and staff asguest presenters. These activities are done with sincerity and respect toincrease knowledge about the various cultural groups of people bothwithin and outside the U.S.The Diversity Committee, a student club (ACCORD), and the International<strong>Student</strong> Programs all contribute significantly to these activities. The<strong>College</strong> has a visible sign of its commitment to diversity on the clocktowerwhich is located on the <strong>College</strong> mall in the center of campus. There is anon-going process for selecting individuals who have contributed to ourcultural heritage. Any member of the <strong>College</strong> community may nominate aperson for inclusion in the clocktower project. Nominations are reviewedby the Diversity Committee and recommendations forwarded toPresident's Cabinet for approval. Three new panels were added spring2000 during a campus celebration at which the governor spoke.Faculty are encouraged to include gender, ethnic, religious, and culturaltopics in the selection of their texts and in their curricula. The libraryseeks funding to increase its collection in special areas and subscribes tonewspapers and magazines printed in languages other than English.Because of recent labor market changes in our area and highunemployment, the entire college staff works to encourage persons-intransitionfeel more welcome and successful by identifying what theirneeds are through formal and informal data collection and through workwith community agencies.Special outreach activities and partnerships are fostered throughcommunity contacts with a variety of social agencies through the<strong>College</strong>'s Worker Retraining and Workfirst Programs.<strong>Centralia</strong> <strong>College</strong> members demonstrate their commitment to thecommunity and willingness to respond to changes in the social, economic
