Standard Three 55special event weeks (Domestic Violence Awareness Week), plus manyquarterly activities which include community agencies. Speakers onhealth care topics are scheduled into many classes and as presenters inpublic forums. Extensive information is provided free to students eitherin classrooms or in the <strong>Student</strong> Center area. Low cost flu shots areoffered on campus annually; cholesterol level testing is scheduledperiodically; and monthly HIV testing is available. Presentations haveincluded eating disorders and other topics of interest to students as wellas the rest of the campus.Information about the Washington Basic Health Plan and the Community<strong>College</strong> Health Plan is available in the <strong>Student</strong> Center and in theCounseling/Career Center.Psychological health services are provided through theCounseling/Career Center and <strong>Student</strong> Support <strong>Services</strong>. The staffmaintains a good relationship with the local mental health system and areable to refer students there for chronic problems and crisis situations.Because good health is essential to students, the <strong>College</strong> includes ahealth requirement in its degree programs. <strong>Student</strong>s may choose fromseveral offerings, but the expectation is to encourage students to takeresponsibility for their personal well being.AnalysisWhile the <strong>College</strong> recognizes the importance of good health and accessto health systems, its primary role is providing health services informationto students or persons who use the campus. Many students have serioushealth concerns and problems, and the staff makes every effort to helpthem connect with community resources which deliver health care.A topic of discussion has been smoking on campus. The <strong>College</strong>recognizes the rights of all students, so a number of sheltered locationsare available for use by any smoker on campus while signs restrictingsmoking in certain areas address the problem for non-smokers.
