CARBON-PROCARBON balance drafting and new resources management toolsaccording to Kyoto PROtocolwww.carbonpro.orgProject DescriptionAreas used by agriculture and forestry are importantfor storing atmospheric CO2, which is aby-product of employing conventional sourcesof energy. It is also one of the greenhouse gasesmainly responsible for global climate change. Anadequate management of agriculture and forestryresources might help to reduce the impact of CO2emissions. In the Kyoto Protocol some strategieshave already been drawn up concerning the positiveeffects of managing the CO2 sink capacitiesof forests and areas used by agriculture. Thesestrategies now have to be implemented. As theworldwide dimension of climate change demandssolutions beyond national policies, the CADSESspace provides a promising field for the applicationof transnational approaches to manage agriculturaland forest systems to improve the carbonbalance.thin the CADSES region. The project frameworkincludes the creation of a complete database onagricultural and forest systems, the setting up ofmodels dedicated to public authorities for the bestmanagement of forests and agriculture and implementationinto actual case studies. The overall long-term objective of CARBON-PROis to assess the characteristics of the main agriculturaland forest systems in the CADSES area inrelationship to the strategies set up by the KyotoProtocol and to evaluate their sink capacity. Strategiesand technologies for improving the managementof agricultural and forest systems willbe defined to obtain the best environmental andeconomic results and to promote sustainable development.Other expected results of the project are:i Common monitoring activities at transnationalEU Regions/Member StatesNon EU Member StatesLead PartnerProject Partner0 200 kmlevel in cross-border areas to determine the balanceof carbon within an integrated methodology,i Actions to support the process of integration ofspatial and rural development at regional level,i Examples and sharing of best practices concerningthe management of closed carbon cycles, which then can also be implemented in otherEU regions.Lead PartnerAutonomous Region Friuli Venezia GiuliaForestry and Forest Fire DepartmentVia del Cotonificio 12733100 UdineITALYContact PersonDott. These include negotiations and compensationpolicies with carbon credits and otherpolicies for reducing the release of CO2 at transnationallevel as foreseen by the Kyoto Protocol. The project involves seven countries from Centraland South-Eastern Europe. Partnership membersare administrative bodies, large cities with forests, research centres and forest management bodies.DurationStart ....................................................... 04/2006End ......................................................... 12/2007Budget (EUR)Total Budget ....................................1,890,641.06thereof ERDF ......................................996,698.73Project PartnersAustriaCERE Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy, EnergyEfficiency and Environment, ViennaCroatiaForest Research Institute, JastrebarskoGermanyTechnische Universität München, FreisingGreeceMunicipality of Thessaloniki, ThessalonikiHungaryHungarian Meteorological Service, BudapestItalyRegion of Veneto, VeniceUniversity of Udine, UdineSloveniaSlovenian Forestry Institute, LjubljanaMEASURE 4.1Results and EffectsThe aim of CARBON-PRO is to share best practicesfor the management of agricultural and forestsystems on the basis of Kyoto Protocol policies wi-Kick-off meeting of CARBON-PRO126INTERREG III B CADSES / PROJECT BOOK
