WESTWomen East Smuggling Traffickinghttp:/www.regione.emilia-romagna.it/westSPATIAL DEVELOPMENTMEASURE 1.4Project DescriptionThe WEST project (an acronym for Women EastSmuggling Trafficking) dealt with the problem oftrafficking and smuggling for the sexual exploitationof women and children coming from EasternEurope. Trafficking, nowadays the largest part ofthe clandestine immigration flow from the Balkanstowards the EU, is characterised by an ever increasingpresence of criminal organisations profiting onthe exploitation of manpower, trafficking of humanbeings and induction of slavery and forced prostitution.This is a phenomenon that not only violatesnational laws which control entry to a country, itis also a perpetual and serious violation of humanrights: people are reduced to a commodity and areoften blackmailed for the rest of their life.The WEST project has organised over 20 campaignsand produced various publications, amongthem three research papers (Hidden prostitution,Life stories, The trafficking flows and routes of EasternEurope), two manuals (Manual of the usualprocedures, Information guide for workers) and avolume of proceedings (Proceeding of the in-depthconference, Bologna, 26-27 November 2004). Partners of the project have beenthe regions of Lombardia, Veneto and Marche, theAutonomous Province of Trento, the Municipalityof Perugia, the Caritas of Udine, the association„On the Road“ of Martinsicuro (Teramo), the Austrianassociation „Mountain Unlimited“ and theAlbanian Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.Results and EffectsThe general objective of WEST has been to analysethe impact of the phenomenon of clandestineimmigration on the local communities of theEuropean countries, by women and young peoplecoming from East Europe and victims of traffickingwho were sexually exploited.
