RIMEDRegional Integration and Metropolitan Developmentof South Eastern Europewww.seed-center.org/rimedProject DescriptionThe RIMED project deals with three serious and interactingproblems of South-Eastern Europe: increasingspatial inequality, serious geographical andeconomic fragmentation and unbalanced or evenanarchic growth of metropolitan areas leading to afurther concentration of activities. The latter maylead to traffic congestion, pollution, environmentaldegradation and social segregation, which threatento undermine the prospects of large cities forsustainable development.Results and EffectsThis project managed to improve co-operationand to establish networks of interaction amongmajor cities in South-Eastern Europe. In that senseit contributed to the general goals of the EU andinternational community in promoting stability, integrationand co-operation in the region. In addition,the project contributed to a balanced and polycentricspatial development in the wider contextof South-Eastern European space by supportingselected cities with a joint strategy of metropolitandevelopment, which has a strong preference forregional cohesion and spread effects to metropolitanhinterlands.
