RainDROPDevelopment of stoRmwater Operational Practices guidelinewww.raindrop.czProject DescriptionResults and EffectsStorm water-related problems are typical of manyEuropean countries. Storm water run-off occurswhen precipitation from rain or snowmelt flowsover the ground. It can be a major reason forflooding but also for surface water pollution in urbanareas. As studies in Germany revealed, morepollutants are released through storm water runoffthan through effluents from waste treatmentplants. Moreover, an increase of storm water-inducedflood events resulting from extensive surfacesealing has been proven. Although alternatives tosimple drainage of the run-off are already available, these measures are hardly implemented yet.In the CADSES region the management of stormwater is becoming a complex affair as the increasingnumber of national water management regulationsis combined with a growing importanceof European legislation, such as the Water FrameworkDirective. So far, no guidelines for stormwater management (SWM) exist. However theseguidelines are needed so they can then be appliedin the whole of the CADSES area. The five partner cities from the Czech Republic,Germany, Greece and Slovakia involved in the RainDROPproject all have problems with storm waterrun-off. In Karvina, Trencin and Vsetin, stormsewers are overloaded. In Aharnai and Kupferzellsmall rivers regularly cause flooding. Moreover, the city of Kupferzell wants to develop a new settlementarea which is only possible if the run-offdoes not increase. The RainDROP project involvestechnical and urban planning departments in municipalities, water works and authorities, investorsand engineers as well as relevant groups of stakeholderssuch as inhabitants and land owners.Within the RainDROP project, a storm water management(SWM) system will be developed, testedand disseminated. The primary results of theRainDROP project will be the provision of guidelinesfor storm water management for planningand implementation which are applicable not onlylocally and nationally in the project region, but alsoin other regions of CADSES. These guidelines willhelp to reduce surface water pollution and floodingand will improve the water balance and waterquality. The project includes the integration of storm watermanagement into urban drainage master planningin the five partner cities. Best management practiceswill be implemented and demonstrated inpilot projects for new development areas as wellas for existing urban settlements through buildingmeasures, such as porous pavements, infiltrationswales, trough-trench systems, cisterns or retentionponds. Current storm water management policiesin other areas of CADSES will be examinedand compared. Moreover, RainDROP will raisethe public awareness of storm water-related problems. The guideline compiled by RainDROP includes variousrecommendations for flood protectionDurationStart ....................................................... 07/2005End ......................................................... 06/2007EU Regions/Member StatesNon EU Member StatesLead PartnerCity of KarvináDepartment of Local EconomyFryštátská 72/1733 24 Karviná-FryštátCZECH REPUBLICContact PersonIng.
