NETWET 2Networking Perspectives of Transnational Cooperation andParticipatory Planning for Integrated Water Resources Managementthrough the Promotion of New Forms of Spatial Governancewww.medregio.org/netwet2/netwet2.htmProject DescriptionNetWet 2 focuses on the development of transnationalcooperation in the field of water managementthrough the promotion of integrated managementmethods and the development of newconditions for „bottom-up“ participatory spatialplanning and promotion of new forms of deliberationand „spatial governance“.ces management spatial plans/Water FrameworkDirective).(c) The „bottom-up“ participation of all actors involvedin the project theme guarantees the directterritorial dimension and ensures the direct spatialimpact of the project. The main NetWet 2 objectives has been the im-Results and Effectsprovement of sustainable best practices for themanagement of aquatic systems and ecosystemsin coastal areas and for the protection of flood riskareas in relation to drought phenomenon. Oneaim of the project has been to develop innovativetools and methodologies for the environmentalmonitoring of the water resources (remote sensingand GIS). Through telematic applications in thefield of water resources management structuresfor transnational distance e-cooperation should beestablished.NetWet 2 project focuses on a series of importantspatial concepts:(a) Development of spatial functional synergies inorder to establish a fixed functional interdependenceamong the varied sectoral actions. Specialisedscientific research is taking into account theregional policies and supporting the promotion ofspatial strategies for water.Traditional water mill (Island of Kefalonia)In the framework of NetWet 2 the following methodologies, innovative tools, sustainable practicesguidelines and pilot studies were implemented:i Development of methodologies and best practiceguidelines for integrated approaches ofwater resources management: in coastal andinsular areas (for example salinity of groundwater aquifers, quality of drinking water, impactof tourism activities on water), environmentalimpact of organic farming on water, pumpingsystems in agricultural areas, protection fromflooding in agricultural and urban areas, managementof areas with high hydrological riskthrough River Contracts in industrial areas,i Development of innovative tools to assist inspatial management of water resources: Innovativetools for recording, the environmentalmonitoring of water resources and the managementof spatial information through remotesensing and GIS (territorial model of ecologicalsensitivity and hydrological, meteorological andterritorial model),i Development of spatial functional synergies forthe integrated spatial management approachof water resources: Transnational forum ofmultilevel deliberation, specifications for theelaboration of River Basin Management Plans, networked itineraries of the cultural dimension -water, economic value of wetlands in relationto their ecological functions, juridical and participatoryissues in water resource management,River Contracts.EU Regions/Member StatesNon EU Member StatesLead PartnerProject Partner0 200 kmLead PartnerCenter of Euro-Mediterranean Regions for the EnvironmentThrassyvoulou 13 – 1510555 AthensGREECEContact PersonDr. Christina DaoussiTel +30 210 32 59 301Fax +30 210 3239 120E-Mail klepsydra@medregio.orgProject PartnersBulgariaBulgarian Academy of Sciences, SofiaGreeceTechnical University of Crete Laboratory of EnvironmentalEngineering and Management, ChaniaAristotle University of Thessaloniki, ThessalonikiUniversity of Thessaly, VolosRegional Development Fund of Thessaly Region, LarissaUnion of Local Authorities of Achaia, PatrasUnion of Local Authorities of Etoloakarnania, MessolongiUnion of Local Authorities of Ilia, PyrgosUnion of Local Authorities of Kefalonia & Ithaki, ArgostoliUnion of Local Authorities of Kerkyra, KerkyraUnion of Local Authorities of Korinthia, KorinthosUnion of Local Authorities of Lefkada, LefkadaUnion of Local Authorities of Messina, KalamataUnion of Local Authorities of Preveza, PrevezaUnion of Local Authorities of Thesprotia, IgoumenitsaUnion of Local Authorities of Zakynthos, ZakynthosENVIRONMENT(b) Integrated spatial development approaches:NetWet 2 aims at developing integrated andmultisectoral approaches with a strong spatial dimension. As a result, an attempt is being made atan integrated synthesis of the varied sectoral approachesthrough the promotion of new forms of„spatial governance“ (including the water resour-DurationStart ....................................................... 01/2003End ......................................................... 06/2006Budget (EUR)Total Budget ....................................2,716,600.00thereof ERDF ...................................1,813,450.00ItalyNational Agency for Environmental Protection and TechnicalServices (APAT), RomeUniversity of Udine, UdineRegion of Lombardia, MilanRomaniaInstitute of Geography of the Romanian Academy, BucharestUniversity of Oradea, OradeaMEASURE 4.3INTERREG III B CADSES / PROJECT BOOK151
