3.2.3.1 Make a table for person analysisA table is a set of data arranged in columns and rows; its purpose is to present the data in a simple way. Foreach priority disease or condition under surveillance, use a table to analyse characteristics of the patients whoare becoming ill as well as to show the number of cases and deaths from the given disease that occurred in agiven time. Annex 19 contains sample tables for person analysis by age, geography, gender distribution andother descriptors.AgegroupNumber ofreported casesNumber ofdeaths0-4 years 40 45-14 years 9 115 years and older 1 0Age unknown 28 0Total 78 53.2.3.2 Calculate the percentage of cases occurring within a given age groupWhen the summary totals for each age group are entered, one analysis that can be done is to find out whatpercent of the cases occurred in any given age group. Use the information on the table to:1. Identify the total number of cases reported within each age group from the summary data for whichtime or person characteristics are known. (For example, there are 40 cases in children 0 through 4years of age.)2. Calculate the total number of cases for the time or characteristic being measured. (In this example, there are 50 cases whose age is known.)3. Divide the total number of cases within each age group by the total number of reported cases. (Forexample, for children age 0 through 4 years, divide 40 by 50. The answer is 0.8.)4. Multiply the answer by 100 to calculate the percent. (Multiply 0.8 X 100. The answer is 80%.)AgegroupNumber ofreported cases% of reported casesin each age group0-4 years 40 805-14 years 9 1815 years and older 1 2Age unknown 28 0Total 78 100Section 3: Analyse Data37
