BiographyOldrich M. Laznicka, Jr. is a Member of the Technical Staff in the Inertial Instruments Division atDraper. He is responsible for research and development of fiber-optic interferometric gyros, acoherent-light communication and sensor system, employing integrated and fiber-optic components.Mr. Laznicka designed an ultra-low-noise detection subsystem and electro-optical control loop forlocking a laser diode to a reference fiber-optic resonator. The PBS transmits the desired polarization whilereflecting the unwanted polarization to a beam dump. Thetransmitted polarization is rotated 45 degrees by the Faradayrotator and is focused by a second lens into the output fiber. Aftertransiting the Integrated Optical Circuit (IOC) and fiber coil, thereturn optical beam reenters the SID and is collimated by thesecond lens. The rotator rotates the polarization an additional 45degrees so that it is now orthogonal to the original beam and isreflected by the PBS onto a signal photodetector.The Source Integrated Detector (SID) is a unique opticalcomponent that combines previously separated components,functions to simplify the optical path, and accommodates avariety of optical sources (for example a fiber source) withoutrequiring significant alterations to its structure or assemblyprocess. The component improves the performance of anInterferometric Fiber-Optic Gyroscope (IFOG) by reducingoptical losses through eliminating a coupler and associatedsplices. The SID’s architecture has evolved from a conventionalplanar SID design to an additional tubular SID design, one thatemploys an efficient camera lens design/assembly process and canavoid the more costly fixturing and assembly operations requiredby the planar design.The SID combines the optical source, photodetector, and opticalcoupler functions into a single compact module. By eliminatingthe standard IFOG coupler, substantial optical power savings isrealized. In using the planar design in an IFOG, the output froma broadband superluminescent diode source is collimated by theThe configuration of the planar SID requires individual mountingand alignment of the optical components. To date, several planarSIDs have been fabricated and have achieved a spread of 125 µWto 520 µW output optical power from its pigtail. To achievemanufacturing repeatability and performance yield in the planardesign would necessitate a significant investment in sophisticatedprocess fixturing and assembly procedures. The wide dispersionin fabrication repeatability has motivated the implementation ofthe tubular design.The tubular SID design eliminates alignment fixturing,incorporates a dual optical detection approach to reduce RelativeIntensity Noise (RIN) and implements the optical train via cameralens assembly techniques.
